Proposed Walmart at Suburban Plaza Info Pours Out of Neighborhood Meeting

Decatur Metro | November 2, 2011

Jonathan Cribbs of North Druid Hills Patch live-blogged the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association discussing the proposed Walmart at Suburban Plaza earlier tonight.  And with both Steve Selig and Walmart representatives in attendance, there’s a heck of a lot of info in there if you’re willing to dig.  Among the highlights…

  • Selig says that the development is in-line with the DeKalb’s LCI plan for the area
  • Lots of bike racks
  • “LA Fitness is “extremely interested” in coming as well. So is Home Goods, Dick’s, Michael’s, hhgregg. Old Pizza Hut will be a new restaurant. Bowling alley is staying. Big Lots is going to stay “temporarily.” “The question Big Lots has is can they compete with the big anchor.”
  • Code is 5.5 per 1,000 parking ratio. Walmart is asking for 3.5 per 1,000.
  • No Walmart Supercenter has ever been shut down – and this will be a Walmart Supercenter
  • Plans are for this to be a 24-hour store
  • Not many metro Walmarts sell guns, but they do sell ammo
  • Trader Joe’s told Selig to “take a hike”

Lots more in the live blog, so check ‘er out!

CSD One of Two Georgia School Systems to Make “AP District Honor Roll”

Decatur Metro | November 2, 2011

From CSD’s website…

For several years, the Decatur High School faculty and staff have worked hard to increase the numbers of students taking and succeeding in advanced content classes. Along with being a goal in the district’s strategic plan, opening access to AP classes has increased the overall rigor at DHS. This year, the City Schools of Decatur was placed on the College Board’s 2nd Annual AP® District Honor Roll for significant gains in Advanced Placement® access and student performance.

The AP District Honor Roll nationally recognizes and acknowledges districts’ successes and efforts to expand AP access, performance, and commitment to increasing student achievement. Only 367 districts were selected nationwide this year. One other district in Georgia (Calhoun City) also received this honor.

Inclusion on the 2nd Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on the following criteria:

  • Examination of three years of AP data, from 2009 to 2011;
  • Increase in participation in/access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts and at least 11 percent in small districts;
  • A steady or increasing percentage of exams taken by African American, Hispanic/Latino and American Indian/Alaska Native students; and
  • Performance levels maintained or improved when comparing the percentage of students in 2011 scoring a 3 or higher to those in 2009, or the school has already attained a performance level in which more than 70 percent of the AP students are scoring a 3 or higher.
  • School districts in which low-income and/or underrepresented minority students (African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaska Native) comprise 30 percent or more of the AP student population have been highlighted on the Achievement List to recognize significant improvements in equity and quality among the nation’s historically underserved student populations.

UPDATE: According to Schumacher, the new owner of the Decatur Diner is Nadul Khan.  Mr. Josovitz describes Mr. Khan as “very experienced in the restaurant business, very nice and was a pleasure to work with on this transaction. He will be a hands on owner.”

———————————————–

The Schumacher Group has a brief announcement on its website…

The Shumacher Group, Inc. and Steve Josovitz has just sold the Decatur Diner located at 205 East Ponce De Leon Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030-3405 at Church Street in the heart of Downtown Decatur.

I’m trying to find out a bit more info.
