Decatur Officer Testifies at the “Mom Arrested at Library” Trial

Decatur Metro | September 14, 2011

While I enjoyed our initial conversation about this incident, I find myself with very little interest in it now, honestly.  But I guess it can’t be escaped.  For all of you who saw this on Dr. Phil a few days back and are breathlessly waiting to know what happens, here’s the latest from the AJC…

A Decatur police officer testified Wednesday that he gave a DeKalb County mother escorted from the city’s library ample opportunity to calm down.

Sgt. Renneth Beaupierre, the superior officer at the time, told the seven-member jury that he was polite and professional as he allowed Donnetta Foster, 20, to vent about what happened at the library last October.

…“It probably went further than I should’ve allowed it,” he said. “But I wanted to give her a chance to express herself.”

Beaupierre also confirmed that he told Foster that what she had to say about the incident “wasn’t important.”

Thanks to Steve for the AJC link and Deanne for the Dr. Phil one!

Too Many Beers – Best I.P.A?

Decatur Metro | September 14, 2011

Remember the days when you could go into a Decatur liquor store and your only options were domestic beers and maybe some Sweetwater?  My have times changed!

With the loosening of Georgia’s liquor laws a few years back allowing for higher octane brews, the Decatur market is now flooded with kilo-gallons of beer options.  So, now instead of complaining about a lack of options, I’m now primed to complain about the tyranny of choice!  I walk into Herb’s, Ale Yeah! or Sherlock’s and I’m presented with hundreds of beer options.

So, I need some help.  We’ve done “Best Wines Under $15” recently, but I need some new beer standbys.  So that at the end of a long day, I can go into a beer retailer and have five or six good options that I can grab and go, and not stand there for 10 minutes, mouth agape, before finally picking up another six-pack of 420.

There are a lot of beers, so let’s start with I.P.A.  In the coming weeks we can move on to other ales, porters, Belgians, you name it.

Construction of Decatur Cemetery Bridges Almost Complete

Decatur Metro | September 14, 2011

Chris Billingsley sends in this great little report and some excellent pics from the Decatur Cemetery…

The bridges across the Decatur Cemetery creek are almost finished. For those of us who have walked through this rather wild part of Decatur east of the cemetery, the bridges and path will probably bring more walkers and improved safety but change the area to a more park-like setting. Somewhat sad but I’m glad that the unusual rock outcropping just south of one of the bridges will remain. In a small way, it makes me think of the waterfalls in the Druid Hills area that I enjoyed exploring so much as a boy (follow the Westchester neighborhood creek a few hundred yards outside the city boundary).

More pics after the jump!
