Construction of Decatur Cemetery Bridges Almost Complete
Decatur Metro | September 14, 2011 | 9:35 amChris Billingsley sends in this great little report and some excellent pics from the Decatur Cemetery…
The bridges across the Decatur Cemetery creek are almost finished. For those of us who have walked through this rather wild part of Decatur east of the cemetery, the bridges and path will probably bring more walkers and improved safety but change the area to a more park-like setting. Somewhat sad but I’m glad that the unusual rock outcropping just south of one of the bridges will remain. In a small way, it makes me think of the waterfalls in the Druid Hills area that I enjoyed exploring so much as a boy (follow the Westchester neighborhood creek a few hundred yards outside the city boundary).
More pics after the jump!

I really don’t understand why the 2nd bridge( in the photos above ) needs to be so massive. We’ve watched the construction process and it sure looks like overkill to me. Are they expecting to drive semis over it?
I’m looking forward to this area’s completion. It’s been in process for close to a year and my girls are tired of having their squirrel-hunting area disturbed. They do want to thank the city for the new swimmin’ holes and for not disturbing their “pool” (3rd pic)!
I am guessing that they made that bridge bigger for maintenance and repair of the sewer line that runs the full length of the creek in that area. That equipment can be quite heavy. I would also speculate that it was one of the reasons they wanted access to that area.
Dog walkers, baby walkers, joggers and strollers will enjoy this path for decades. Although Decatur will lose one of it’s few remaining “wilderness” areas, the upside is that thousands of people will see this area that never would have before. Also a nice shortcut for some.
I haven’t been in that area for years but in the early 60’s we use to catch fish in the biggest pool. I don’t know if it is the one in the photo. It seemed huge back then but looks smaller now. I look forward to going back.
I am crushed that the sledding hill was destroyed. What brought more joy than zooming down the hill on a rare snowy day in Decatur? Nothing.
Speaking of the cemetery, what is the deal with the cemetery fence on the curve on Commerce next to mini-Kroger? Some driver evidently took the curve too fast and took out a section months ago, and it’s been down ever since. I know repairing old wrought-iron fence isn’t cheap, but really . . . Does anyone have the skinny on what happened and why so long to fix it?
