Decatur Square Readies for Fireworks

Decatur Metro | September 24, 2011

Kevin sends in this great photo of Decatur Square from the third floor window of The Square Pub.

Oktoberfest with a hint of 4th of July!  Can’t be beat, IMO.

“What to Expect When You’re Expecting” Filming in Decatur Next Week

Decatur Metro | September 24, 2011

Chris Billingsley sends along a letter from the movie What to Expect When You’re Expecting’s movie’s location manager, which notifies area residents that the movie would be filming scenes at 116 East Maple Street next Wednesday and Thursday (9/28-9/29).   The note sums up the movie thusly…

“The story is a romantic comedy adaptation of Heidi Murkoff’s pregnancy guideline book of the same name.  The film tells the story of five couples coping with life’s unexpected trials and tribulations when they are ‘expecting’.  As a native ‘Atlantan’ it brings me great please to inform you that the story is set in our beautiful city, which will be showcased on a nation scale.”

It goes on to detail truck placement and traffic flow.

IMDB shows that there’s a big ol’ cast for this movie, including Cameron Diaz, Chris Rock, Jennifer Lopez, and Elizabeth Banks.

The city states that though they are in process, they still haven’t permitted the project, according to Patch.

PATH Looking To Extend Freedom Park Trail to Centennial Park

Decatur Metro | September 24, 2011

If you’re a Decatur-liver and a downtown Atlanta commuter, you may welcome this news – IF you ride (or fantasize about riding) a bike to work and you don’t break out in hives thinking about riding on the PATH trail.

According to Atlanta’s transport sage, Thomas Wheatley, PATH is in the final stages of extending the Freedom Park Trail down Harris Street thru downtown Atlanta to Centennial Park.

Two lanes of traffic along Harris Street would be removed to transform the road into a more pedestrian friendly thoroughfare with a 10-foot-wide bike path, a tree-lined buffer and new crosswalks.

Wheatley reports that the project costs around $2 mil and would be paid for by the PATH Foundation.  Though it sounds close to becoming a reality, PATH is currently working with area businesses to address concerns about deliveries, if two lanes were taken out of Harris Street to accommodate the um…path.
