Decatur Parent: McKoy Pool is “Gross”

Decatur Metro | June 20, 2011

Christine writes in…

Have you been to the McKoy Pool lately?? I mean, I love that place – it’s convenient and my two little kids adore the zero entry – but it’s gross. Band-aids floating by, cloudy water that helpfully hides the branches and dirt in the bottom, and don’t get me started on the muddy “lawn” area.

Is this just what it’s going to be like? Should I just suck it up because it’s a great pool for little kids? I already mandate showers at home immediately afterward. I’m dying to know if anyone else has similar thoughts or ideas to ask the city to clean it up.

Green Ginger Decatur Taking Place of Amaryn Thai Bowl?

Decatur Metro | June 20, 2011

A new liquor license request  (see page 12 of the meeting materials) before the Decatur City Commission this evening shows “new applicant” Jen Huang is applying for a liquor license at 265  Ponce de Leon Place.

A quick check of Google Maps shows that this is the current location of Amaryn Thai Bowl.   (Mellow Mushroom is also located in that building but seems to have a Suite # attached to its address, unlike Amaryn)

You may recall our big ol’ conversation about Amaryn’s potential closing last September.

Decatur Looks to Improve Wi-Fi Service

Decatur Metro | June 20, 2011

Decatur recently put out a Request for Proposals (aka RFP) “seeking an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to upgrade, operate and maintain the city’s existing municipal WiFi network.”

According to the RFP, the city is looking for an Internet Service Provider to…

(a) make recommendations about how to modify the existing network to improve performance and stability and to focus on those areas that can be served reliably;

(b) provide marketing and customer acquisition services;

(c) operate, maintain and support the network that currently serves educational, residential, commercial, and municipal customers within the City of Decatur boundaries.

If Decatur could create a reliable Wi-Fi service for around the $25/month it currently charges, it could save many of us significant amounts of money.  Hopefully the city can find an ISP that’ll do just that.

BTW…I didn’t see anything about creating a Decatur Wi-Fi mobile login page in the RFP, but hopefully that’s still on the city’s radar.

Mayor’s on the Move

Decatur Metro | June 20, 2011

Some of you have noted in comments that Mayor Bill Floyd’s house has had a “For Sale” sign out front for a couple weeks, and more recently has an “Under Contract” sign slapped on top of it.

Mayor Floyd confirms that he and his wife are trying to sell their West Ponce house and plan on downsizing.  In his words “Happened a lot quicker than we thought.  We have our eye on another house in town with no yard and smaller.”

In District #1, no doubt!
