Decatur City Staff Proposes Moving Three Areas into Southern Voting District

Decatur Metro | June 2, 2011

In an effort to comply with the federal government’s “one person/one vote” standard in Decatur’s northern (District #1) and southern (District #2) voting districts, the City of Decatur is proposing to the City Commission that three areas currently residing in the northern district be shifted to the southern prior to the upcoming elections in November.

As you can see from the map above, they include the area around East Decatur Station west of Columbia Drive, an area north of College Ave between Church Street and McDonough, and the area immediately west of Commerce and Electric Ave (which includes Swanton Heights).  To view a map with greater detail than the one above, see this PDF.

According to the city’s website, “the City Commission will hold public hearings and will consider the charter amendments at the June 6, 2011 and Jund 20, 2011 City Commission meetings. Meetings are held in the City Commission Meeting Room, Decatur City Hall, 509 North McDonough St, Decatur, Gerogia beginning at 7:30 p.m.”

Pastry Chef Cynthia Wong Leaving Cakes & Ale for Empire State South

Decatur Metro | June 2, 2011

The AJC’s John Kessler reports that Cakes & Ale’s pastry chef since the restaurant’s inception, Cynthia Wong, is departing and heading to Empire State South “within the month”.

As Kessler notes, this is a bit of a hiccup for the restaurant, which is currently opening a bakery adjacent to its under-construction new location along Sycamore @ Church Street in downtown Decatur.

However, C&A’s chef and owner Billy Allin tells Kessler that they’ve got people in place to fill in during the interim until Allin can rustle up a new executive pastry chef.

Mid-Week History: DeKalb Drinking Laws Question

Decatur Metro | June 2, 2011

A question this week from HistoryJoe to all the Decatur/DeKalb history experts out there…

I was trying to confirm a story I’ve heard on historical tours about liquor laws in DeKalb County. I’ve heard that it was pretty much dry until “recently” but cannot confirm many real dates. I found one reference that said in 1971 the county allowed whiskey sales (not sure if that was retail or by-the-drink).

Via microfiche at the library, I found Decatur commission allowed Sunday by-the-drink in 1986. If anybody has some approximate dates for when DeKalb went “wet” and when Decatur went "wet" I would be much appreciative.
