Marc Reynolds, Co-Owner of Heliotrope, Passes Away

Decatur Metro | August 11, 2010

It crushes me to relay to you all that I have just received word and confirmed that Marc Reynolds, one of the co-owners of Decatur’s Heliotrope, died last night.

Marc was a great guy.  From the other side of the counter at Heliotrope, he was always soft-spoken and kind.  Marc was always eager to relay a kind word or suggest a stylish or slightly humorous home accessory to you.  He was also a heck of a business man.  While Decatur has certainly seen its fair share of gift/home shops over the years, Marc and his partner Tommy turned Heliotrope into one of the most iconic shops in town.  No small feat.

Our hearts go out to Tommy, Marc’s family, and the whole Heliotrope crew.  He will truly be missed.

“The Square Pub” Coming to Decatur Square

Decatur Metro | August 11, 2010

Scott sends in this pic of a Coming Soon sign for “The Square Pub” in the old “Pharmhouse” space along the Sycamore Sidewalk, which runs along the southern edge of Decatur Square.  I have yet to locate a website to determine any potential offerings.

But the larger question here is, when will Decatur hit pub-pacity?  I guess we can use the Brick Store wait-time as a gauge on that.

Decatur: City of Social Drinkers, Urban Thinkers and Little Stinkers.  :-)

Two Open Positions on DHS School Leadership Team

Decatur Metro | August 11, 2010

Past President of Decatur High School’s School Leadership Team, Lew Lefton, writes in…

This fall, there are two parent positions open on the DHS SLT. Initially, there was a deadline of August 6, 2010 for applications, but that deadline is being extended to make sure anyone who is interested has an opportunity to apply.

If you have a child at the high school, this is a great way to be involved. If you are interested in being on the ballot, you are encouraged to submit the following to the DHS office or via email to Lauri McKain (lmckain@csdecatur.net):

  1. A short biographical sketch or résumé (including, name, contact information, relationship to the School (e.g., ages/grades of kids), occupation/background, any other relevant information).
  2. A brief statement of why you are interested in serving on the SLT.

Overnight Accident on Oakview Road

Decatur Metro | August 11, 2010

A family who witnessed the crash writes in…

Around 2:15 this am, someone hit (mangled and totaled, to be precise) a parked car on Oakview then slammed into a power pole on the median with enough force to split it in two pieces. The woman driver left the scene of the accident, but also left her car! She ran into the parking lot of the Spring Point apartments; as far as we know, she vanished. Just thought you might be interested. My husband was woken up by it, went outside and saw what happened. I saw the car and the power pole this morning and have no idea how it was physically/physic-ly possibly for her to hit both the car and the pole!
