As State Struggles to Meet Math Standards, Decatur Freshman Excel
Decatur Metro | August 1, 2010Mr. Chris Billingsley notes that the AJC’s recent article about how Georgia students have had a heck of a time trying to make the grade on the state’s End of Course Test has a chart showing Decatur’s freshman produced the highest Math I average in all of metro Atlanta.
And that bragging right might also apply to the entire state.
A chart found at the bottom of an article titled “Final exams show teens struggle with new math curriculum“, shows Decatur freshman averaged a score of 84 in Math I, the highest mark across all metro Atlanta school district. (In Math II, Decatur sophomores produced a 74, an average score for the metro area.)
Looking across the AJC’s state database, Mr. Billingsley noted he couldn’t find another district that scored better than Decatur’s freshman in Math I. To average a solid B on a test – which, according to the AJC, is so “souped-up” to get kids into college that it’s “leaving some students in the dust” – is certainly a noteworthy accomplishment.
