“The Square Pub” Coming to Decatur Square

    Decatur Metro | August 11, 2010

Scott sends in this pic of a Coming Soon sign for “The Square Pub” in the old “Pharmhouse” space along the Sycamore Sidewalk, which runs along the southern edge of Decatur Square.  I have yet to locate a website to determine any potential offerings.

But the larger question here is, when will Decatur hit pub-pacity?  I guess we can use the Brick Store wait-time as a gauge on that.

Yes! I’d buy that shirt in a heartbeat…

Wonder why you would open a new pub right next door to Mac McGee’s, which is my favorite pub in Decatur. Seems like it will be harder to find a niche with Mac McGee’s and Brick Store on the square, and Twain’s and The Marley in close vicinity.

      • Scott says:
        August 11, 2010 at 11:20 am

There’s something to be said for overflow. I hit Mac McGee last night, totally packed. Moved on to BSP in hopes of finding a table, half to full hour wait. On a Tuesday, fer cryin’ out loud.

I just hope they put some decent thought and money into it. That space just doesn’t seem to connect with people if you don’t have good concept and delivery. Capt. Pharmy’s, anyone?

        • DenKon says:
          August 11, 2010 at 12:28 pm

Well, if Mac and the Brick were packed on a Tuesday night, then there probably is some demand to capture. I agree that to succeed, the Corner Pub is definitely going to need a gimmick or point of distinction, other then we are the pub for customers that can’t get a seat in the other pubs.

            August 11, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Strike Corner Pub, meant to write Square Pub. Where is the logo police to correct my error?

Mac Mcgees also had a 50% off that hit scoutmob this week. that may have been part of the reason for the large #’s there on a tuesday.

        August 11, 2010 at 1:02 pm

        Everyone….chill.

The square pub thing is a marketing ploy. The owners of MacMagee bought it and are expanding MacMagee. I think. This is RIGHT next door, correct?

        Perhaps a name change? I don’t know.

Aw, way to burst our collective bubble. We had the new business plan, new pub name and t-shirt all ready to go!

Aren’t the logo police going to say that logo is too easy?

Don’t look now, but you just became the logo police.

Quick! Make them line the walls with bookshelves. Then we can have a new pub + community sharing bookcase all in one spot that has longer hours than the library.

      • Rain says:
        August 11, 2010 at 12:15 pm

I love it! That can be the place for the used books/book sharing idea that was mentioned a while back. Work out a donations for beer trade to get the thing going. Then besides it looking good (I’m picturing a 14 ft-wall bookshelf with rolling ladder) it will help with sound absorption. Win win!

        • Brian says:
          August 11, 2010 at 4:08 pm

beer + “14 ft-wall bookshelf with rolling ladder” = lawsuit waiting to happen! :)

        • Rain says:
          August 11, 2010 at 12:55 pm

PERFECT! And it will go so well with your new t-shirt that you’re printing, right? Decatur does love its books and beer. I’m thinking they’ll need something to differentiate themselves from the plethora of pubs, and this could do it! Now for the new logo…

          • Rain says:
            August 11, 2010 at 1:01 pm

Okay, what about the Paperback Pub? (Book Store Pub just might offend the lovely neighbors.)

          August 12, 2010 at 3:40 pm

Not such a far-out idea, actually. Ever been to Kramerbooks in D.C.’s Dupont Circle, with its Afterwords Cafe? They don’t like you mingling pints with print, but on a busy nights when they’re too preoccupied to care, it’s quite possible to browse with a brew in hand. When Warren at Decatur CD posted a notice a few years back that he intended to open a pub in his store, I was quite taken by the idea until he pointed out the date of his message: 4/1.

          • Decatur Metro says:
            August 12, 2010 at 3:47 pm

Oh, I totally fell for that April Fools joke as well. I also thought of that CD store/pub idea when someone mentioned this book store pub thing-y.

It’s not that far-out a concept. Both are/were “third-places” for various communities, and today many indie bookshops are looking for ways to supplement profits that have been lost to Amazon to remain the hub of a community.

Many have done it with coffee. I guess alcohol is just the next step.

I can already see it: Tuesday nights are “Random Book Reading” night. What piece of drivel will we pull off the community bookshelves this evening?

Lol i don’t know if a rolling ladder is a great idea in a pub.
however i’m all for lots of books

        • Cat says:
          August 11, 2010 at 2:37 pm

They just need to attach a breathalizer to the ladder. If you are too drunk to climb, you are too drunk to drive!

GSU had its Library on Courtland Street when I went there (30 years ago, wow). I used to tell my (now former) spouse that I was staying late at school to study at the Library.

I think Decatur would have a long way to go to hit the number of pubs that would equil a typical Irish town! But we can try!

Not sure what that says about us…or Ireland.

I would be really excited to see a pub in the old Blue Elephant book shop space. Maybe the Blue Elephant can just re-open as reading pub. Even better, Decatur could expand the lines about 1/2 mile on the north side and I bet the whole Publix shopping center would become pub central!

Mac McGee’s was originally supposed to expand into the space but that deal fell through largely because they were not going to be able to create a thru-way between the two spaces.

The owners of the Square Pub are former Taco Managers with a lot of culinary experience and beer knowlege.

The big hurdle may be in finding an appealing way to get people to venture up to the higher levels.

i was kind of hoping to see something like a loca luna or tapas bar go in here. i think the set up would be good for it since loca luna locations have always been sort of spread out & multi layered. plus, it is always packed! you could have a band on the 2nd or 3rd floor. just seems like a good fit for that space in my mind.

I got a scoop from a fellow standing outside the place this afternoon. Not an extension of Mac McGee’s. Also, the sign in the window is not the logo, just a teaser for us passersby. Of course, the fellow may have been just some guy hangin around. FWIW.
