Vote For Decatur’s Best Beach Party Window!

Decatur Metro | June 1, 2010

Starting this Friday June 4th, you can vote for your favorite window display among the Decatur businesses participating in this year’s Beach Party Window Contest.

Between June 4th-June 18th, stroll by participating shops, press your nose up against the window and check out their beachy window displays.  If you like what you see, text the code found in the window to 80672.  The business with the most text votes wins.

Who’s participating?  Why that would be, Boogaloos Boutique, Cook’s Warehouse/ Sherlock’s Wine Merchants, Greene’s Fine Foods, Mingei World Arts, Peggy’s Boutique, Salon Red Kids, Squash Blossom, Steinbeck’s, The Seen Gallery, Universal Joint, Wild Oats and Billy Goats, and Worthmore Jewelers.

Got all that?  (A bit more info and a map of participating businesses HERE)

No word on what the winning shop might receive, but I hope it’s made out of sand!

Maloof Building Roof To Finally Be Replaced

Decatur Metro | June 1, 2010

I dare say the entire building needs replacing.  But still, good news.

This from DeKalb Commissioner Jeff Rader’s Digest…

Water leaks have prompted the cancellation or relocation of several meetings scheduled in the annex building of the Manuel Maloof Building, the county’s official headquarters in Decatur.   The leaks have called attention to the building’s aging roof, long overdue for repairs.

Thanks to an Energy Block Grant from the federal government’s stimulus program, the county will be able to repair the roof at no expense to the county budget.[nbsp] The repair project, not to exceed $580,000 will install energy-efficient roofs on the Maloof annex and the primary Maloof Building.

The repairs are a step towards catching up on backlog of deferred maintenance on county buildings, but also improving their energy efficiency in order to protect the environment and lower energy costs in the long run.

Decatur: Where There’s No Excuse Not To Get Involved

Decatur Metro | June 1, 2010

According to the City Manager’s budget message, 82% of those who took the Decatur Citizen Survey think that the city does an “excellent” or “good” job at welcoming citizen involvement.

How does that compare to the 280 other jurisdictions who asked that same question on their 2010 citizen survey?  It’s #1.

Push Push Offers Two Theater and Film Camps This Summer

Decatur Metro | June 1, 2010

From Push Push Theater’s Aimee McCoy…

As part of our award-winning SmallTall Youth Program, PushPush Theater will be holding two summer camps in June and July. This year, both camps will include a theater, film, and improv component, and will allow students to try their hand at work behind and in front of the lights. The process will be centered on a specific text and the story will unfold utilizing all three components. The camp will culminate in a professional public performance at noon on the final Friday of each camp. PushPush invites all youth 8-12 and teens 13 and up to participate in the camps, and encourages the community to attend their final performances.
