Where Ya Headed?

Decatur Metro | June 16, 2010

According to Forbes, 10 million Americans moved in 2008.

And while we know blanket facts like “the city of Atlanta is growing in population”, it’s difficult to get a sense of where these folks are coming from.  Also, what about the much-less-discussed people leaving the city?  Where are they inclined to move?

Luckily Forbes magazine has created a great, new interactive map that shows the in and out-migration patterns for every county in the country.  Above is the map for Fulton County, representing “Atlanta”.  Check out that Northeast/Rust Belt/Florida in-migration!

And who knew that most people who left Atlanta went decidedly west?   (Also note the thick red line indicating outward migration down to New Orleans from Atlanta.)

And if you think Atlanta is fascinating, check out Manhattan, Seattle and Dallas.  Or any other county in the U.S. that strikes your fancy!

Just don’t miss Detroit.  It’s a visual bloodbath.

Ponce Court Makes Georgia Register of Historic Places

Decatur Metro | June 16, 2010

Already a local historic district with all the rules and regs that go along with that, Ponce de Leon Court is setting its sights on state and national recognition…along with some snazzy tax credit options.

From Regina at the Decatur Minute…

Several residents of Ponce Court attended a hearing on June 4th at the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office and were given the great news that their neighborhood is considered worthy to be listed on the Georgia Register of Historic Places. One of the attendees was 82 year old Graham Thomas who lived on the street from 1920-1940. Next, the district nomination will be sent to the National Register of Historic Places in Washington DC where the nomination will hopefully be accepted and Ponce Court will be listed as an important historic district in the United States.

The proud and happy residents can now take advantage of significant property tax relief programs and income tax credits made available to properties listed on the Georgia and National Registers of Historic Places.

Indigo Girls To Play Free Concert for Emory Community This Fall

Decatur Metro | June 16, 2010

Do you have some sort of Emory affiliation?   Then consider yourself the lucky recipient of a free Indigo Girls concert!

Since so many Emory students, staff, faculty and alums visit this site, I figured this was relevant  enough to post.  From Emory’s Alumni web page…

Grammy-winning alumnae duo to headline 2010 Homecoming festivities

Before they were the Indigo Girls, they were Emory students.

And on September 25, the Grammy-winning Emory alumnae duo of Emily Saliers 85C and Amy Ray 86C will make a triumphant return to their alma mater to headline this year’s Emory Homecoming Weekend festivities with an exclusive concert on McDonough Field. The show is presented by the Emory Alumni Association (EAA) and is free and open to the Emory community, including students, alumni, faculty, staff, and parents.
