Sugar Creek Garden Needs Volunteers

Decatur Metro | May 10, 2010

I like it when AJC.com acts like a blog…

Decatur’s newest community garden needs volunteers willing to trade work for produce.

Volunteers who spend at least two or three hours per week at the Sugar Creek Garden, part of the Oakhurst Community Garden Project, can trade their hours for what vegetables and flowers come up from the work.

Volunteer hours in May are available on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Groups and individuals are welcome.

For more information or to sign up, contact Lindsey Mann at lindseyemann@gmail.com or 404-377-2843.

My work here is done. :-)

Leaving Their Parents Behind

Decatur Metro | May 10, 2010

Highways, the GI bill, cheap gas, and inner-city racial tensions contributed to that sociological storm that made “white flight” the rhymey-rage 50 years ago.  At least that’s what the history books tell me. According to those hard-backed tomes, a predominant number of Caucasians packed up their families and headed from the inner cities out into the promised tranquility of the suburbs, where car and manicured lawn were king.

Life was deafeningly tranquil, interspersed with moments of maddening gridlock.  What more could middle-class America possibly want?  Something completely different apparently.

Decatur Superintendent To Consider Other Locations for Pre-K Classes

Decatur Metro | May 10, 2010

UPDATE: Dr. Phyllis Edwards official response to the concerned parents can be read HERE. Of particular note, she says that one of the ECLC sites cannot be used for trailers because that proposed piece of property must be used to expand and upgrade the playground.

A week after receiving a letter from a group of concerned parents about the recent decision by Superintendent Phyllis Edwards to move three pre-K classes to the Clairemont Elementary School campus, CSD Communications Director Bruce Roaden tells DM that the Superintendent is “exploring options for where we will place the pre-kindergarten students (if not at Clairemont).”

The letter, written and signed by eight CSD parents, asked the Superintendent to reconsider her recent decision to move two pre-K classes at Decatur High School and one at Oakhurst Elementary to Clairemont’s campus, citing worries that adding classrooms will lead to future overcrowding at the elementary school and wouldn’t be in the best interests of CSD’s long-term development plans.

Emory Village Saba Reopens 7 Months After Fire

Decatur Metro | May 10, 2010

Seven months after a fire gutted Saba’s original Emory Village location, the pasta and sandwich joint has finally reopened to the public.

Signs around the Emory location and in Decatur tell me this.  Also I saw people eating on their little patio the other day.  (Report AND confirmation!)

Just in time for Emory graduation!
