Former Agnes Scott President Ruth Schmidt Passes

Decatur Metro | May 26, 2010

From Agnes Scott College…

Ruth Schmidt, Agnes Scott College’s first female president and an early champion of campus diversity and international study, passed away May 24 at the age of 79.

A service in celebration of her life will be held at North Decatur Presbyterian Church, 611 Medlock Road, on Thursday, May 27 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow in the church’s fellowship hall. Plans are underway for a service at Agnes Scott in June.

Schmidt served as president of Agnes Scott from 1982 until 1994, ushering in many changes at the college. Among her priorities as president were international education for students and increased diversity among faculty and students. During her tenure the Julia Thompson Smith Chaplaincy was established.

Much more on President Schmidt’s legacy HERE.

SOPO Bike Rack Option

Decatur Metro | May 26, 2010

So, SOPO Bicycle Co-op will install this two-bike rack for $95 a pop.  ($85 each additional)

Is this what people were thinking about installing down between The Marlay and Farm Burger?  If so, how many?  Do we want to look into the custom racks or “recycled bicycle frame” racks or just stick with the cheapest option?

If there’s general consensus, we’ll just need to get clarification from Chadwick about where we can install them on The Marlay property and I’ll contact some of the businesses in the area (and perhaps the Bike Decatur folks) about donating to cover the cost.

City of Decatur Eliminated 5 Vacant Positions in Past Year

Decatur Metro | May 26, 2010

You can now register your official approval/disapproval of Decatur’s 2010-2011 budget over on Open City Hall.

Among the bullet points in the Open City Hall overview is the “elimination of 5 vacant full-time positions”.  But you have to dig into the City Manager’s 20 page, single-spaced budget message for detail.

During the past year, two full‐time positions were eliminated in the Active Living Division. One position in senior services has been replaced with part‐time staff and at the tennis center, a full‐time assistant program supervisor position was eliminated and duties are also being covered as necessary with part‐time staff. These two changes have allowed us to meet essential service needs with greater flexibility at a reduced cost.

In the Children and Youth Services Division, two full‐time positions have been eliminated. Our long‐term plan is to concentrate on upgrading the existing Site Director positions through training and skill development to continue to improve an already superior program.

In the Police Department one of two administrative assistants is retiring as of July 1st. Existing duties will be covered by the other administrative assistant and by sharing some responsibilities with existing part‐time employees. One full‐time position will be eliminated.
