Snow-lanta: Not If, But WHEN!
Decatur Metro | February 11, 2010Dun, dun, dun!
Yes, it’s that time of winter again, when transplanted Northerners laugh at native Atlantans’ supposed fear of snow and ice, refusing to hear the rational retort of “Um, hello? We don’t have snow plows.”.
The AJC report really builds up the impending drama of Snow-Friday.
“It is not a question of whether we will see winter weather — basically snow — across most, if not all of [north and central Georgia], but rather a question of how much,” the Weather Service said.
Not a question?! GASP!
In order to maintain the appearance that we’re freaked out, I suggest everyone go to the store right now and purchase a cart-full of unneeded food and food-ish items!
I take offense to the “unneeded food and food-ish items” snarky comment. Who are you, DM, to tell me that I won’t need 6 loaves of bread and 4 gallons of milk between now and Saturday afternoon?!
And please, dear God, don’t try to tell me not to drive faster when I get off work early. If I drive faster in the snow, I can get home earlier, thus getting off the road, thus helping out traffic. Hey, I have a huge SUV, isn’t that what it’s for?
Is this another example of the accurate, hard hitting journalite of today’s AJC?
Time to buy snow toys! Intown Ace Hardware on Scott Blvd. had them last time it snowed!
I wonder if tomorrow will be a snow day. With the kids being off next Monday and Tuesday for President’s Day and teacher work day, that would be five straight days of being around my own children. Not sure I’m up for that.
I plan to do what my mother always did–say “put on your snowsuits and go out to play all day!” The key is WATERPROOF mittens, boots, and pants. Kids will stay out in the snow all day as long as they don’t get wet. Once they are wet, it’s all over.
Yes, and when you hit the store to get stuff you don’t really need, make sure you’re completely distracted and block the aisles and slow everyone down while you’re at it.
Oh, this is terrible! My husband has been working in the DC area the last few weeks, and they have managed to catch all their flights back and forth despite the ENORMOUS snowstorms up there. How pathetic if Hartsfield closes for this teeny-tiny snow event and he gets stuck up there Valentine’s weekend! yuck!
Hmm. My idea of a great Valentines gift would be if I was the one who got stuck in D.C. and my husband was stuck with the kids for 5 days here. Should have, could have, would have…
Your husband is lucky. I have been stuck in Philadelphia all week – hoping to get out tonight. I liked snow, up until it cancelled my flight/closed the airport. I just want to get home…and I want spring. Over this cold weather.
Nubbs, sorry to hear you’re stuck. Get back soon!
Speaking of warm weather, where’s our token lower-70s February weekend?
Here I am! Oh wait, wrong token. Sorry, my bad.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a decent national rail system as an alternative?
Not a good sign Nubbs.

Luckily I made it home – but am supposed to fly to Dallas tonight and that flight was cancelled. Am flying out on Saturday now, so get to spend one extra night at home in my bed.
I hope we have snow, but I’ll believe it when I see it! This morning, 11Alive didn’t seem to think snow would make it this far north.
See http://www.weather.com right now: “Big snow for the Deep South”. It’s got a big white swatch that seems to go over us. The hour-by-hour report indicates that the greatest chance of snow is between noon and 7 PM tomorrow. Hard call. School could be cancelled and then nothing happens. Or school could be in session and then sleet/ice happen just as the kids, teachers, and staff are going home. I actually worry about the kids and adults leaving in cars more than my bus riding kids. The heavy, slow buses are probably some of the safest vehicles on the road.
I lived in South Carolina one time when, because of the threat of snow, they called off school at 6AM. It did snow about an inch, the sun came out and the temp topped 60 degrees that day.
Cat food? check
Dog food? check
Bottle of wine? check
I’m ready.
So you feed your animals and then get them drunk to pass the time?
I’d drive through the snow to see that!
lmao
I have this sudden urge to buy bread, beer and eggs on my way home tonight even though I don’t need any.
Weather Channel just reported 2-4 inches for Atlanta!!
O how I yearn for the days when 2-4″ meant a day or two off from school for snowball fights and sledding on Kirk Rd.
Now it means it’ll take me 20 minutes to drive one mile to work and that my office will be extra cold.
You could walk the one mile in ten minutes and already be warm when you arrive.
Amazing that it could be snowing in Atlanta on Friday while they are predicting rain and a low of 42 degrees in Vancouver for the start of the Winter Olympics on Friday.
Snow ice cream recipe: big bowl of fresh snow. Mix in separate bowl: Half-N-Half, plus vanilla extract, plus sugar, and stir until the sugar is all dissolved. Pour this milk milxture into the bowl of fresh snow and stir vigorously. Wonderful stuff, and impresses the kids too…
That’s pretty much the same base we use – then we add crushed pineapple and chopped maraschino cherries. Makes the wonderful stuff even better . . .
Was always my favorite part of snow days when I was a kid! My mom always made this stuff! That is, until “acid snow” became the next big thing to worry about…*sniff*

Just eat the ice cream anyway, you are already breathing in the same stuff. Might as well enjoy your life in every way you can.
Sounds great, but too much work. We’d just fill a bowl with snow, then bring it inside and pour maple syrup on it. I don’t know why that seemed to taste better then ice cream, but it did!
Nice, but the authentic method is to first boil the maple syrup and then pour designs on the snow that harden into soft candy. Yum!
However, CLEAN snow is essential for all these recipes and that can be hard to find unless one puts out clean collection pans now or we get enough snow to totally cover dirt and leaves and leave a clean top layer of snow.
I have three “snow bowls” sitting out right now to get good clean snow for my ice cream. I have never tried the maple syrup approach — sounds delicious!
The snow is PERFECT right now. I’m collecting it too!
My wife just reminded me that we don’t have any beer in the house. Woe! This means one of us will have to brave the blizzard tomorrow. Since I’m the Chicago native, this will likely be me.
