Legislation Would Mandate Local Govts To Put Budgets & Audits Online

    Decatur Metro | February 16, 2010

    From AJC’s Gold Dome…

Most local governments would have their budgets and audits posted on the Internet under legislation unanimously approved by the Georgia House on Tuesday. The obligation would apply to cities and counties with budgets of more than $1 million, said Rep. Ed Lindsey (R-Atlanta), the bill’s sponsor. The Carl Vinson Institute at the University of Georgia would post the budgets and audits on line. The cities and counties already are required to produce the budgets and audits. The goal, Lindsey said, is to allow citizens to have easy access to records on how their government is spending their money. It also will allow people with Internet access to compare the spending of their city or county to that of other governments, he said. The bill now goes to the state Senate for consdieration.

I like!  Of course, Decatur’s budget is already posted online.  As is Avondale Estates’. (pdf).  Not sure about audits.

    Automobile Smashes Decatur Cemetery Sign

    Decatur Metro | February 16, 2010

UPDATE: Steve comments: “It was an automobile cited for “Failure to maintain lane”. Duh! The DPD did file an accident report.”

    Marlatiara asked DM on Twitter…

Haven’t seen anyone mention that the Decatur Cemetery sign is destroyed (near baby Kroger). Know what happened?

    And then followed up with…

Looks like something smashed into it. Made me sad b/c they seemed to have just fixed the missing letters – now no letters left!

I’m waiting on a response from Asst. City Manager David Junger for more details.  In the meantime, if anyone drives by and can snap a pic, I’ll add it to the post.

Vatican Astronomer to Discuss Space Exploration at Agnes Scott Tonight

    Decatur Metro | February 16, 2010

This sounds like pretty compelling stuff.  From an Agnes Scott College press release…

Brother Guy J. Consolmagno, SJ, an American research astronomer and planetary scientist at the Vatican Observatory, will discuss “The Ethics of Exploration: Planetary Astronomy” during a lecture at Agnes Scott College Feb. 16. The 7:30 p.m. event is in Evans Hall and is free and open to the public.

A number of ethical issues arise in the field of planetary sciences ranging from the way astronomers do their work to the broader question of the nature of exploration itself. Is the study of astronomy a valid use of scarce resources, or does it make inappropriate demands on money, human talent and scarce environmental settings? Are humans “contaminating” space with their presence? Consolmagno will discuss these and many other questions during his lecture.

More info, including a short bio of Consolmagno can be found HERE.

    Decatur Unofficial Visitor’s Guide

    Decatur Metro | February 16, 2010

I’ve been thinking that my “Decatur Tips & Links” page needs a revamp.

But instead of just links to the city’s recycling page, I was hoping to create a comprehensive list of all the “inside scoops” about Decatur.  So, in addition to “Park in the Courthouse Deck after 6p!”, what other tips would/do you give to visitors (or new residents) about our fair city?

After we’re finished here, I’ll compile them all on a new and improved page!
