Drivers and Walkers: How ‘Bout Those New Crosswalks?

    Decatur Metro | February 1, 2010

Now that the city has installed all seven new faux-brick crosswalks across the city, I’d love to hear some feedback from both motorists and pedestrians on what they think of those slightly elevated, slightly textured walking lanes.

I’m especially interested in hearing opinions about the one I traveled over (on wheels) this morning: West Howard @ Adair St.  Thus far, crosswalk monitor Andisheh Nouraee doesn’t sound impressed.

New brick crosswalk at Adair & W. Howard thus far has no noticeable effect on speeders. They still fly by.

And from what I recall reading somewhere at some point, Mr. Wang isn’t all that impressed with driver-calming at the South Candler additions.

And in addition to observations of others, do you find yourself driving any slower through these areas/intersections?

City Responds To Flooding in Midway Woods

    Decatur Metro | February 1, 2010

UPDATE III: Asst. City Manager David Junger responds “Our Storm Water Engineer Julie Gyuricza received this complaint this morning and she is investigating the nature and cause of the flooding. We do not have enough information currently to know why this area flooded.”

UPDATE II: Jon writes in with a second report…”So it turns out there was a major blockage in one of the 18 inch pipes, and the city has already come out and taken care of it. They have also said they will be on the lookout for the area in the future.  I’m really pleased with how quickly the city has responded to us. I hope you let everyone know, because the city earned it’s reputation on this one….”

UPDATE: Jon writes in “Peggy already has the drain crew out looking at the area. It’s really great to see the city respond so quickly.”

Four days ago, Paula reported “rumbling on the Midway Woods yahoo group about the stalled development at Midway and S. Candler. …the latest is that the clearing of the lot has caused huge run-off problems and flooding.”

Yesterday evening, the President of the Midway Woods Neighborhood Association, Jon Rork, wrote in asking for help…

Bystander Shot Outside Edgewood Shopping Center Sunday

    Decatur Metro | February 1, 2010

Atlanta Police already have two people in custody from this shooting, which took place yesterday afternoon around 5p at the Edgewood Shopping Center.  From the AJC…

The shooting left a 30-year-old man with a bullet wound in the back. The man, whom Schwartz did not identify, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and was in stable condition.

He was idling at a red light on Moreland Avenue when the bullet struck him, Lt. Darin Schierbaum of the Atlanta police said. The man drove into the shopping center and stopped in the parking lot of the Kroger grocery store. A woman in the passenger seat was uninjured, Schierbaum said.

The man was driving a four-door Toyota Matrix. A bullet hole was visible in the rear driver’s-side door. Another hole could be seen in the lower back area of the driver’s seat.

Over at CL, Thomas Wheatley reports that Chef Richard Blais tweeted that he heard 3 shots fired and then saw a moving truck “screaming wildly thru the park lot.”

A Penske truck and a silver Mercedes have been tied to the event.  Both vehicles have already been recovered, along with two so-far unnamed “persons-of-interest.”
