Tonight at the Dalton Gallery: First Grade Fish!

Decatur Metro | December 4, 2009

Oakhurst fish

Get on over to Agnes Scott’s Dalton Gallery right now!  Emily sends in this email…

Tonight in the Dalton Gallery

5-7 p.m.

AN EXHIBITION OF FISH

By Oakhurst Elementary’s First Graders

Stop in to experience the fish swimming around the gallery! Professors Nell Ruby and Lock Rogers designed and taught a project to 100 first graders inspired by by William Nixon’s “Salmon Run.”

The young students first visited the “Still Water” exhibition where they were given a tour by ASC students

  • Victoria Campbell ‘12
  • Arianne Kahn ‘10
  • Olivia White ‘09
  • & Lauren Whitton ‘10.

Then, at the elementary school, Professors Ruby and Rogers focused their program on the form and function of fish bodies.  With the Oakhurst Elementary art teacher, Amy Evans, the students made their own fish, who are now swimming around the Dalton Gallery!

Daily Candy Cancels Atlanta Edition – and 6 Other City Editions

Decatur Metro | December 4, 2009

daily candyAs pointed out by EldredgeATL (via Twitter), Daily Candy announced in an internal memo yesterday that it is canceling its city-specific editions in seven of twelve cities…and Atlanta is among them.

From Valleywag…

DailyCandy will now stop publishing city-specific editions in all but five of those 12 cities: New York, London, LA, Chicago and San Francisco. Subscribers in the other cities will now receive an “Everywhere” edition, supplemented with local news and events twice a week.

Hmm…I don’t think my wife is going to be very happy about this.  Not to mention all the local businesses that were regularly written up in the popular local shopping e-newsletter!

Decatur High School Wins $3 Million Technology Grant for Career Academy

Decatur Metro | December 4, 2009

UPDATE: Ha!  Apparently I should have checked the Atlanta Business Chronicle and the AJC before posting this.  They both have whole darn articles about the $3 million being given to create a “career academy” at the high school.  It will be one of four in the state of Georgia.

DHS teacher Chris Billingsley reports in…

Great News!

Mr. Duane Sprull, DHS assistant principal in charge of vocational education, stopped by the Close Up meeting yesterday to announce that Decatur High just won a $3 million plus grant to upgrade the technology in our vocational building. Mr. Sprull gave most of the credit to DHS teacher Mr. Brent Eickhoff for leading this effort but I suspect that Mr. Sprull and longtime vocational teacher Mr. James “Big Jim” Streeter had a lot to do with this success.

Congratulations Mr. Sprull, Mr. Eickhoff, Mr. Streeter, and all the vocational teachers who helped to win this grant.

I’m going to follow up and see if I can get a few more details on this impressive grant. Stay tuned.
