      My questions for the week:

What the heck is going on at Thai Me Up?

Did the music store actually move?

What the heck is up with Avellino’s?

The Atlanta Bread Company space- rented or not?

Indian food at Nectar- hot or not?

Snow day on Monday? Hell yeah!

        December 4, 2009 at 11:23 am

Only one I can answer. Nectar is owned by the same folks who own Bhojanic on Clairemont near N Decatur Rd. Its “hot” in my estimation.

          December 4, 2009 at 12:25 pm

I assume we’re using “hot” to mean good and not spicy? Cause I’m looking for some spicy food to clear up the colds we have at our house, so if we’re talking “mild/medium/Indian hot” kind of “hot” – I’m there!

          • Carolyn says:
            December 4, 2009 at 12:28 pm

It is “the best” – you WON’T be disappointed!

Re: Indian food at Nectar- hot or not? – Answer HOT! (the good kind). I think having access to YUMMY indian food in Oakhurst is the best thing to happen (food wise) in a long time. And its about time! Everyone needs to eat there to encourage them to keep it all the time!!!

Do you mean Dekalb Musician’s Supply? Yes, they moved into a hole in the wall where it seems like they purposefully are trying NOT to be found. But they are still doing really good work over there and I’ve recently had great customer service. It’s just that they are super hard to find now. Over on New Street.

Total noob question but can you carry out from Taqueria de Sol? I am scared to go and find out.

Is something up with Avellino’s? I love their pizza!

      • Becky says:
        December 4, 2009 at 10:31 am

Yep you can defo carry out from Taqueria. If they are not busy (whenever that might be) I think you can sit at the bar for a bevvy.

Avelinos – I love their pizza too. Hope they are doing OK.

      • Decatur Metro says:
        December 4, 2009 at 10:32 am

Regarding TdS takeout. Yes, if you go up to the bar you can order up to 4 items and no more. Then you go and sit at the bar by the front window and they’ll bring it up to you.

Also, I believe only one person can order takeout at a time, so if someone else is already waiting on an order, you must wait til they receive their food before ordering.

Sooo…why is everyone asking what is up with Avellino’s?

        • Still another Eric says:
          December 4, 2009 at 10:51 am

My guess would be that they have appeared closed recently. Tried calling more than once for an order at dinner time last weekend (not Thanksgiving), but no answer.

haha. funny. Their Yelp page says, Yes for take-out. Their web site, however, does not include any more information.

DM, how long did it take for you to become aware of their take-out protocol? Was it just observation? Trial & error?

            • Decatur Metro says:
              December 4, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Pugs, I figured it out through lots of sitting at the bar. :-)

And honestly I like the unspoken rules. It gives it an insider’s feel. And it’s something a national chain would NEVER attempt, so I love it for that reason too.

Now if only they implemented a secret password at the entrance they could become a California Mexican Prohibition Bar, like the one that just not-so-secretly opened in Buckhead.

              • writerchad says:

I may lose my membership in the order of the secret taco, but there serve a delicious dessert that is not on the menu.

        • Roo says:
          December 4, 2009 at 11:19 am

Aw screw it. That’s way too complicated for me. I’ll just wait until my kids are not hellions.

I am totally bumming about Avellino’s if that is the case. We carried out from there the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and our out of town family all loved it. If they are not closed, they need to advertise more.

        • FH says:
          December 4, 2009 at 12:58 pm

Just called Avellino’s. No answer. During lunch. Bad sign. Anyone know what’s up?? Bummer that a cool place would close so quickly.

          • Scott says:
            December 4, 2009 at 1:03 pm

They’re not closed. Just had pizza there the other night.

Based on observation, here’s my guess of their usual hours (I make NO claims of accuracy):

            Tuesday – Saturday for dinner
            Sunday – Monday closed
            No lunch at this time

            Can anyone confirm or deny?

          • Nelliebelle1197 says:
            December 4, 2009 at 1:23 pm

I know one of the owners of Avellino’s – long, complicated and weird story- and I do know he has a busy lunch place at Auburn Ave., which is why they weren’t opening for lunch. i was just wondering if anyone had any scuttlebut about why I haven’t seen the lights on… I suppose I could waddle over to Auburn Ave. and see what’s up…

      • Nelliebelle1197 says:
        December 4, 2009 at 1:01 pm

        Hey, Roo, what’s a noob?

So you can’t get a big takeout from the Taco Nazis anymore? I have ordered for 20 before.

        • Nubbs says:
          December 4, 2009 at 1:25 pm

My understanding is that you can still get an order of 20 tacos, but you have to wait in line for that…4 or less – order at the bar. Anything over, get in line….

        • Roo says:
          December 4, 2009 at 2:33 pm

noob = newbie. I know I shouldn’t let the Taco Nazis scare me but they do.

            December 4, 2009 at 4:22 pm

The secret to getting on the good side of the taco nazis is to go there very, very, very often- then you get smiles and friendly faces. I can luckly coattail on my husband’s attendance record. yum.

Also, they have a catering menu that is supposed to be very good.

So as not to hijack the 5th Avenue thread….

Does anyone know the history of the addition / entrance way that is part of the Church on Oakview and Spring (across from5th Avenue). You know the one that I am talking about if you ever walk down Oakview where 5th & Spring more or less converge. What seems to be a breezeway or entrance way actually protrudes into the sidewalk, I believe. I am surprised something like that ever was approved by the city. I have to assume that it was built long ago.

I’m getting ahead of myself but maybe the 5th Avenue PTA will work with that congregation to modify that building. Personally, I don’t see it as a safety issue, more of a nuisance, but I’d bet others might think differently.

      Just Curious.

      • Kris says:
        December 4, 2009 at 11:55 am

I have been curious as to if the building is still in use. I have never seen people or cars there. Do you know if there is still a church utilizing the building?

        • Greybeard says:
          December 4, 2009 at 2:38 pm

The building at the corner of 5th and Oakview was a neighbood store for years. I grew up on 4th and went to 5th Avenue Elementary and spend my nickels at that store in the 50’s and early 60’s. I even worked there for a short time. The front has had a new look added since then but it was always right on the sidewalk. I don’t know if the building is still in use.

          • Decatur Metro says:
            December 4, 2009 at 2:46 pm

Thanks so much for that great first person history Greybeard!

That’s a frickin’ great, little building.

            • Still another Eric says:
              December 4, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Really? Not to get into a debate with this blog owner, but you think that building is frackin’ great? Sorry, but I might be missing the sarcasm.

It probably was a nice little store, with good frontage along the sidewalk, but you can clearly see in the Street view shot how the addition jumps right out onto the side walk. And where are the windows?

And nothing against the church itself. Probably a really nice community. I think it is still active. Earlier this year I passed by while services were going on.

              • Decatur Metro says:
                December 4, 2009 at 4:44 pm

No sarcasm. I’m a sucker for a unique building. I’m not saying it doesn’t need a little love and a reno to clean it up – and add a few windows – but it’s still pretty cool. I bet Greybeard could tell us what it used to look like prior to it’s decline.

And no worries. Getting into a debate with the “blog owner” is encouraged!

          • Still another Eric says:

      • Scott says:
        December 4, 2009 at 1:14 pm

It’s part of a new program Decatur PD is trying, where they subject minor offenders to shame and humiliation. I didn’t realize they’d be taking it to such extremes. I feel sorry for the people who were forced to do this.

I’m a relatively recent member at Core on Dekalb Ave/Howard. Very happy.

Quiet, low key, no scene, friendly staff. Inexpensive too. No kids that I’ve seen, which is either a plus or minus, depending of course, on your particular situation.

Have you ever heard of this:

We all know that when we move to another residence, we go to the Post Office and complete a change of address form. If mail is sent to our old address, the Post Office will print a yellow label with your new address, stick it on your mail and deliver it.

HOWEVER, somehow someway, someone I do not know has changed his address to MINE! The labels the Post Office puts on the items have a person’s name I have never heard of but with MY ADDRESS!

I have repeatedly written notes to the carrier and returned the mail. They simply print a new sticker and send it back. I have written THREE LETTERS adressed specifically to the Postmaster at 30030 but have received no reply. I’ve done a web search for the person the items are addressed to but am unable to locate him.

I’m on the verge of going postal!

someone may be trying to steal your ID
someone may be trying to establish residency in Decatur without moving here
someone may be hiding from an ex

Check your credit reports; do a freeze if anything is weird.

Have you opened any of the mail to see what is being forwarded?

        • Trudy says:
          December 4, 2009 at 2:47 pm

Thanks for the advice – fortunately, I froze my credit last year. I haven’t opened any of the mail, but now that you mention it, it appears to be financial in nature. I live in a condo complex and all our mailboxes require a key for access.

I am going to take additional steps to prevent identity theft. I’m a little freaked.

          • scoobydoo says:
            December 4, 2009 at 3:10 pm

since you live in a condo development – have you checked w/ the HOA just to be sure there is no one by that name living in the building? maybe it was an innocent mistake & the person accidentally submitted an incorrect address? just grabbing for straws…but, it couldn’t hurt to check it out. may be as simple as having them resubmit if there is someone by that person’s name living in the development.

no worries! hopefully it’ll be the more simple solution to the problem. :) much better than going postal. hope it works!

                December 4, 2009 at 5:07 pm

scoobydoo’s theory sounds like the most likely scenario. And it’s quite possible you wouldn’t know the person in question because they are a new resident (hence the forwarded mail). The individual in question could be similarly pulling his hair out as we speak, trying to figure out why he’s not getting any mail.

If this was an identity theft situation, I think the thieves would be doing everything in their power NOT to alert you to it. Having their mail forwarded to you would be an awfully bad start.

They make strollers specifically for pets. It’s basically a mesh box on wheels. The pets don’t get strapped in.

You can also ask for beans in your cheese dip.
