My questions for the week:
What the heck is going on at Thai Me Up?
Did the music store actually move?
What the heck is up with Avellino’s?
The Atlanta Bread Company space- rented or not?
Indian food at Nectar- hot or not?
Snow day on Monday? Hell yeah!
Only one I can answer. Nectar is owned by the same folks who own Bhojanic on Clairemont near N Decatur Rd. Its “hot” in my estimation.
I assume we’re using “hot” to mean good and not spicy? Cause I’m looking for some spicy food to clear up the colds we have at our house, so if we’re talking “mild/medium/Indian hot” kind of “hot” – I’m there!
It is “the best” – you WON’T be disappointed!
Re: Indian food at Nectar- hot or not? – Answer HOT! (the good kind). I think having access to YUMMY indian food in Oakhurst is the best thing to happen (food wise) in a long time. And its about time! Everyone needs to eat there to encourage them to keep it all the time!!!
Do you mean Dekalb Musician’s Supply? Yes, they moved into a hole in the wall where it seems like they purposefully are trying NOT to be found. But they are still doing really good work over there and I’ve recently had great customer service. It’s just that they are super hard to find now. Over on New Street.
Total noob question but can you carry out from Taqueria de Sol? I am scared to go and find out.
Is something up with Avellino’s? I love their pizza!
Yep you can defo carry out from Taqueria. If they are not busy (whenever that might be) I think you can sit at the bar for a bevvy.
Avelinos – I love their pizza too. Hope they are doing OK.
Regarding TdS takeout. Yes, if you go up to the bar you can order up to 4 items and no more. Then you go and sit at the bar by the front window and they’ll bring it up to you.
Also, I believe only one person can order takeout at a time, so if someone else is already waiting on an order, you must wait til they receive their food before ordering.
Sooo…why is everyone asking what is up with Avellino’s?
My guess would be that they have appeared closed recently. Tried calling more than once for an order at dinner time last weekend (not Thanksgiving), but no answer.
The Taco Nazis.
haha. funny. Their Yelp page says, Yes for take-out. Their web site, however, does not include any more information.
DM, how long did it take for you to become aware of their take-out protocol? Was it just observation? Trial & error?
Pugs, I figured it out through lots of sitting at the bar.
And honestly I like the unspoken rules. It gives it an insider’s feel. And it’s something a national chain would NEVER attempt, so I love it for that reason too.
Now if only they implemented a secret password at the entrance they could become a California Mexican Prohibition Bar, like the one that just not-so-secretly opened in Buckhead.
I may lose my membership in the order of the secret taco, but there serve a delicious dessert that is not on the menu.
Aw screw it. That’s way too complicated for me. I’ll just wait until my kids are not hellions.
I am totally bumming about Avellino’s if that is the case. We carried out from there the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and our out of town family all loved it. If they are not closed, they need to advertise more.
Just called Avellino’s. No answer. During lunch. Bad sign. Anyone know what’s up?? Bummer that a cool place would close so quickly.
They’re not closed. Just had pizza there the other night.
Based on observation, here’s my guess of their usual hours (I make NO claims of accuracy):
Tuesday – Saturday for dinner
Sunday – Monday closed
No lunch at this time
Can anyone confirm or deny?
I know one of the owners of Avellino’s – long, complicated and weird story- and I do know he has a busy lunch place at Auburn Ave., which is why they weren’t opening for lunch. i was just wondering if anyone had any scuttlebut about why I haven’t seen the lights on… I suppose I could waddle over to Auburn Ave. and see what’s up…
Hey, Roo, what’s a noob?
So you can’t get a big takeout from the Taco Nazis anymore? I have ordered for 20 before.
My understanding is that you can still get an order of 20 tacos, but you have to wait in line for that…4 or less – order at the bar. Anything over, get in line….
noob = newbie. I know I shouldn’t let the Taco Nazis scare me but they do.
The secret to getting on the good side of the taco nazis is to go there very, very, very often- then you get smiles and friendly faces. I can luckly coattail on my husband’s attendance record. yum.
Also, they have a catering menu that is supposed to be very good.
Anyone know why the speed limit is 35 MPH on College (in front of Agness Scott and Renfroe) where it is two lanes? And, its only 30 MPH on Dekalb Ave/West Howard where it’s 4 lanes?
Drove by the Christmas tree last night and it is lovely. Thanks to all who made the tree possible.
I was out at the Tree lighting event last night–what a hoot. We all owe a big thanks to Krista at Little Shop. She did a great job!
So as not to hijack the 5th Avenue thread….
Does anyone know the history of the addition / entrance way that is part of the Church on Oakview and Spring (across from5th Avenue). You know the one that I am talking about if you ever walk down Oakview where 5th & Spring more or less converge. What seems to be a breezeway or entrance way actually protrudes into the sidewalk, I believe. I am surprised something like that ever was approved by the city. I have to assume that it was built long ago.
I’m getting ahead of myself but maybe the 5th Avenue PTA will work with that congregation to modify that building. Personally, I don’t see it as a safety issue, more of a nuisance, but I’d bet others might think differently.
Just Curious.
I have been curious as to if the building is still in use. I have never seen people or cars there. Do you know if there is still a church utilizing the building?
The building at the corner of 5th and Oakview was a neighbood store for years. I grew up on 4th and went to 5th Avenue Elementary and spend my nickels at that store in the 50’s and early 60’s. I even worked there for a short time. The front has had a new look added since then but it was always right on the sidewalk. I don’t know if the building is still in use.
Thanks so much for that great first person history Greybeard!
That’s a frickin’ great, little building.
Really? Not to get into a debate with this blog owner, but you think that building is frackin’ great? Sorry, but I might be missing the sarcasm.
It probably was a nice little store, with good frontage along the sidewalk, but you can clearly see in the Street view shot how the addition jumps right out onto the side walk. And where are the windows?
And nothing against the church itself. Probably a really nice community. I think it is still active. Earlier this year I passed by while services were going on.
No sarcasm. I’m a sucker for a unique building. I’m not saying it doesn’t need a little love and a reno to clean it up – and add a few windows – but it’s still pretty cool. I bet Greybeard could tell us what it used to look like prior to it’s decline.
And no worries. Getting into a debate with the “blog owner” is encouraged!
And Yes. Thanks a lot for the history.
Does anyone know what the oldest continuously operating business in the City of Decatur is?
Sharian?
I’d be shocked if it wasn’t Sharian. I think they’ve been on Ponce since the 1930’s.
Before it was on Ponce the business was run out of the Sharian’s home on Drexel.
The next comment will now be about zoning. I can feel it.
Yes, it’s shocking -business out of their house!?! Can the be retroactively penalized?
I, too, think Sharian. I imagine Lyn will confirm or not whenever she checks this blog.
Agnes Scott, founded in 1889 as the Decatur Female Seminary.
I think the OP meant for-profit business.
I got that, but didn’t particularly care.
Nellie’s gone rogue.
Don’t make the mistake of calling her alma mater Agnes, either, bub.
Last guy that did that is swimming with the fishes in Shoal Creek.
It’s innocent snark, I swear!
If you are comparing me to Sarah Palin, just remember: A Clockwork Orange is on one of my 182 movie channels, and I am very impressionable.
In addition to Free-For-All-Fridays, can we have They-Took-The-Toys-Tuesdays? Man, that was fun.
I’m working on a screen play, look for the feature in theaters soon.
Working title, “The day they took the toys away.”
If you don’t move to Powder Springs, you could be a star.
Nah, I’m positive a talent like Tee’s cannot be directed.
Why have I seen at least two people walking cats in strollers?
I love that instead of just mentioning that you’ve seeing people walking cats in strollers that you phrased it as a question.
“Ma’am. Why are you walking your cat in a stroller?”
It’s part of a new program Decatur PD is trying, where they subject minor offenders to shame and humiliation. I didn’t realize they’d be taking it to such extremes. I feel sorry for the people who were forced to do this.
Shame and humiliation from Decatur PD? I thought that was TDS’s policy toward uninitiated customers.
Wait – is it the cat that’s being humiliated or the human?
Maybe they were taking them to the vet, and pushing a stroller is easier than lugging a carrier??
I dunno, but I saw one too this week…on the sidewalk outside College Heights ELC. Looks like it’s just an annoying trend.
Not unless there is suddenly an Oakhurst vet I have never heard of before. Good try though.
Ever tried to walk a cat on a leash?
As though we didn’t have a big enough problem with people walking their damn rugrats in strollers, now people are walking their cats?
Next thing you know they’ll be taking their dogs to restaurants like the Joint. Oh wait, nevermind.
Yeah, what’s up with THAT?

What’s the best gym in Decatur? I just heard about Snap Fitness by the Solarium in Oakhurst and think I might try it out. Price seems very reasonable as well.
I’m a relatively recent member at Core on Dekalb Ave/Howard. Very happy.
Quiet, low key, no scene, friendly staff. Inexpensive too. No kids that I’ve seen, which is either a plus or minus, depending of course, on your particular situation.
I’ll second Core, having been a member for a couple of years. Good equipment, clean, no kids and often not crowded. They may not be the cheapest around, though.
I like Snap Fitness. It’s low-key, and open 24 hours. The clientele ranges from casual treadmill user to hard-core weight lifters.
Have you ever heard of this:
We all know that when we move to another residence, we go to the Post Office and complete a change of address form. If mail is sent to our old address, the Post Office will print a yellow label with your new address, stick it on your mail and deliver it.
HOWEVER, somehow someway, someone I do not know has changed his address to MINE! The labels the Post Office puts on the items have a person’s name I have never heard of but with MY ADDRESS!
I have repeatedly written notes to the carrier and returned the mail. They simply print a new sticker and send it back. I have written THREE LETTERS adressed specifically to the Postmaster at 30030 but have received no reply. I’ve done a web search for the person the items are addressed to but am unable to locate him.
I’m on the verge of going postal!
I think I’d just start shredding the stuff.
Pardon my paranoia but
someone may be trying to steal your ID
someone may be trying to establish residency in Decatur without moving here
someone may be hiding from an ex
Check your credit reports; do a freeze if anything is weird.
Have you opened any of the mail to see what is being forwarded?
Thanks for the advice – fortunately, I froze my credit last year. I haven’t opened any of the mail, but now that you mention it, it appears to be financial in nature. I live in a condo complex and all our mailboxes require a key for access.
I am going to take additional steps to prevent identity theft. I’m a little freaked.
since you live in a condo development – have you checked w/ the HOA just to be sure there is no one by that name living in the building? maybe it was an innocent mistake & the person accidentally submitted an incorrect address? just grabbing for straws…but, it couldn’t hurt to check it out. may be as simple as having them resubmit if there is someone by that person’s name living in the development.
Good idea! I know everyone in my building, but it could be another. I’ll do just that. Thank you!!!!!
no worries! hopefully it’ll be the more simple solution to the problem. much better than going postal. hope it works!
scoobydoo’s theory sounds like the most likely scenario. And it’s quite possible you wouldn’t know the person in question because they are a new resident (hence the forwarded mail). The individual in question could be similarly pulling his hair out as we speak, trying to figure out why he’s not getting any mail.
If this was an identity theft situation, I think the thieves would be doing everything in their power NOT to alert you to it. Having their mail forwarded to you would be an awfully bad start.
once i saw a monkey in a stroller. it was very scary. (but i can’t believe a cat would actually let his/her owner buckle them in a stroller for any length of time unless it was one sedated kitty)
p.s. writer chad, i will play the role of the misunderstood crank in the day they took the toys of away movie,
They make strollers specifically for pets. It’s basically a mesh box on wheels. The pets don’t get strapped in.
I’ve seen a woman walking down the street with a cat on her shoulder. Not in Decatur, though, unfortunately.
I wanna be in the movie too! I wanna play the evil church lady who makes the kiddies cry when she throws away their plastic toys!
Favorite off the menu at TDS is “the George” which is beans, rice, and turnip greens all together.
You can also ask for beans in your cheese dip.
I’m pretty sure they would “life-time ban” you if you brought a cat in a stroller.
for the love of all things beautiful this holiday season…..please take down the pumpkins before putting up the christmas lights!
I am wondering why you would want to walk a cat in a stroller.
Oh, and has anyone else seen the old dude on the motorsicle wearing a poddle in a Baby Bjorn? He wears leathers and a German helmet. He and the white mini poodle vzrooooom down Oakview when the weather is nice.
