Rob Pope To Run for CSD Board of Ed

    Decatur Metro | June 22, 2009

Judd writes in with news that he’s confirmed that Clairemont Saturday Math Academy coordinator Rob Pope will run for Valerie Wilson’s vacated spot on the Board of Education.

Though Rob doesn’t have a website or statement yet, Judd points to this Decatur edTV video about the Clairemont Math Academy to get a good introduction to Rob.

I’ve known Rob for quite a while and he is a great candidate who is dedicated to making sure that all children in Decatur succeed. I hope that everyone will take the time to learn more about him and that we will have more people stepping up to the plate to run for school board. At the very least, it’s time for a dialog about where we want to go with this school system. It’s time for some new voices. The old voices have done a great job to this point, but I’d like to see some fresh perspective. Change is good in moderation and we’ve had the same board for the most part for quite a long time now.

I hope that no one will hold it against Rob that the Decatur Zombie Benevolent Society has endorsed him.

Agree that Rob is thoughtful, committed, energetic, articulate, and sticks to his guns. He is active on the Clairemont SLT which has been one of the best SLTs in terms of embracing the concept of true local school governance and in terms of accomplishments, like instituting the Saturday math academy.

This is great news! I sincerely hope that more people will step up to run for the board this fall. We need some clearly stated “issues” and some clearly defined “sides” so that more people will understand that we can have choices about decisions that are made instead of the Superintendent’s recommendations always being the deciding factor.

Glad to have new blood interested in a filling what is a thankless position. No good deed goes unpunished, as the saying goes.

Regardless of the makeup of the Board, I tend to give a very qualified, very thorough and circumspect Dr. Edwards the benefitof the doubt.

      Talk about a thankless position!

Have you confirmed that Valerie Wilson is not running for re-election, DM? If not, then I might be careful calling her spot “vacated.”

Totally right on Zombies. Let’s not get into a debate here about how wonderful the out and on-going board members are — let’s get new voices/perspectives in there. Across the Board!
