The End of Tossed?
Decatur Metro | August 4, 2008Carl writes in with a report that Tossed has peeled all of lettering off their doors. He also was good enough to include the pic above. Is this the end for this short-lived salad spot?
If so, I can honestly say I was expecting this one. While I never actually tried this salad joint, it was mainly because my wife had a pretty mediocre, over-priced wrap there once and then refused to go back. One would think a salad place might make it here, but they just never seemed to fit in.
I mean if I can get an $8 sandwich at Sawicki’s…why get a salad wrap for the same price?
UPDATE: We walked by this evening, and it definitely seems closed. Why else would all the bathroom paper towel dispensers be sitting on a table out front?
We got a sandwich platter and a box of dessert from Sawicki’s to take to Chastain Amphitheater the other night. Absolutely great.
Tossed? Meh.
This is a perfect example of a decent (I won’t say great) concept ruined by poor execution. I’m surprised that they lasted as long as they did. We gave them 2 chances. In each instance the food was mediocre; the service was apathetic and slow (it’s a salad for heaven’s sake!)
Didn’t care for it when we tried it.
Ran into the manager once at Chocolate late one night having a drink after closing. I asked him how it was going. He said we’re not doing well. I asked him what he thought the problem was. He said, “we’re the f-word”. As I struggled to grasp his meaning he said, “Franchise”. “Oh”, I said.
Never ate there. Wonder if another nail place will open up.
I liked the overpriced salads and tolerated the service. . . . How about Doc Greens? The prices are more reasonable and the concept is similar.
We walked in once – the smell of the place was so awful that we walked out and never came back. Great idea – terrible execution. I’d love a decent, fresh salad bar in town (that does not smell like burning toilet deodorizer).
Wow, surprised by the negative reactions. I went once, thought the salad was very good, though expensive. Admittedly a pretty limited sample, though. Speaking of franchises we do need to get rid of, when will Ruby Tuesday’s pack in it on their downtown Decatur experiment? Talk about concepts that just don’t fit. I have never walked by there when it looked busy.
From the two chances we gave ‘em, I came to the conclusion that any concept where the prospect of ordering a salad is so complicated that even the employees are unclear how it works is not a great model.
Talk about the tyranny of choice!
Those chain restaurants in the bottom of mixed use developments sound good on paper. But guess what? Decatur ain’t Marietta. Or Smyrna. You can’t build cool. It just grows.
Upscale automats are on the comback….for those too young (lucky you!) to know what that is google:
Bamn
Look at images tab also….this might work close to Emory.
went once, it was ok. salad was nice, but expensive. never went back. too bad.
I went there twice, found it okay but not great. I did not like how they charged for each and every topping – made the end result way too expensive and made me resent how little of a topping I would get for the price. Automosphere was not great for dinner, either. Only thing I liked about it was being able to sit outside and watch people, and being able to have a light dinner before over-indulgence at the Chocolate Bar next door. Overall – I am not too surprised about this.
If someone could come up with a plan to open a place where you could eat while getting a pedicure and read a book at the same time, with $3 coffee available while shopping for $100 mens shirts and $60 womens tops in one location….INSTANT GOLDMINE!
Maybe a f2O would fare better here. I love the one on Peachtree.
I spoke with the owner of Dressed (which I’ve always preferred) about opening here but unfortunately they’re overwhelmed with new locations in Buckhead, Perimeter, and several slated for Hong Kong. I agree that F2O (which I also enjoy) could probably work better here. Tossed was crippled by a system that required all franchises to operate exactly alike, even when it was extremely bad for business.
F2O is understandably non-committal about the possibility of coming to Decatur but isn’t opposed either. If you like the concept, feel free to encourage them to come here. The Tossed space may be too small, but you never know.
Does anyone have contact with the owners of the former My Friends Place here? That could be a good fit as well, although the rent may be too steep.
I couldn’t drink to it. I think we thought the food was okay, but really really overpriced for what it was. TOSSED SALAD!??
I have to agree with most of the postings here, the food was mediocre and overpriced.
Yet most restaurants, around 50% if I am correct, suffer this fate.
Talk about a tough business! Yes, rewarding when done right. Although a grueling one at that. Given the recent minimum wage increase and fuel delivery prices, I can only see this trend increasing to those who invest in the franchise model.
I ate at Tossed about twice a week since it opened. The salad/crepe roll-ups were great. I never really got the “overpriced salad” argument that I heard time after time. My meal was usually about $8 for a huge crepe stuffed with quality ingredients. About the same price as a burrito of mostly cheap rice and beans from Raging… yet no one seems to complain about paying $8 for a burrito.
I admit, I did always get my food to-go due to the horrible bus station ambiance.
I guess that works in NYC but not so much in DEC.
Amen to the Raging Burrito comment. While their burritos are much better than Moe’s and even Willie’s (IMHO as someone who rolled burritos at Frijolero’s back in the day), I find it hard to swallow (pun intended) $7.25 for a basic burrito with chicken. It’s time we had a benefit to bring back Tortillas. Or, hey, wouldn’t a Decatur EATS be great?
Mike
EATS would crush! Simple, cheap and mucho tasty. Bring ‘em on!
If there was an Eats in Decatur, I might as well just make my kitchen into a bedroom. I would never cook again.
Back to Tossed, I enjoyed their food and agree with some things you did get a good bit of food for the money like the chicken salad sandwich but when I got the lobster bisque to go once and the to go cup was only half full and there was not a single piece of what otherwise could be recognized as lobster…well, I never went back. I complained and got an apathetic response and vowed never to go back.
Unfortunately, food in general is simply more expensive than it used to be. Although this is a side topic, keep in mind that all prices at Raging include tax. Last night on the way to the library event (also involving food, of course!), I had a fantastic burrito and a pint of Sweetwater IPA for less than $10 with tip.
Ironic name for this restaurant
I think having a place called Tossed Salad so close to the county courthouse probably scared lots of people off.
i used to work at tossed. no one was ever in there, its like they didnt do their hmwk before they moved in for a 10yr lease… i mean there was no parking and pedestrians weren’t impressed. okay-salads for about $8 a bowl would not suit my stomach nor wallet, ever. i mean, so what the company started in nyc…so what the same ppl who own TOSSED, owns DOC GREENS… doc is so much better, and not just because they can serve alcohol…
