The City of Decatur's Picasa Web Album
Decatur Metro | March 10, 2008Have you seen this?
Moments ago, I stumbled across the City of Decatur’s Picasa Web Album. Included in it are a couple Fire Dept. pics, shots from 2007 Electronics Recycling Day, and a most interesting, recent series showing Before and After pics of streetscapes and many downtown establishments that have been reborn in over the years.
Here’s a taste…Sweet Melissa’s
Before
After
Make sure to check out the whole album. Some pretty shocking contrasts in there.
Glad you found the before and after shots interesting. We have an entire file of these photos. Made me realize that we need to go back and add dates to these photos to put them in context. The aerial of the MARTA construction goes back to the late 1970s when the original station was being built. The one of the plaza showing that lovely concrete elevator shaft that once stood outside the entrance to Birdie’s dates back to the early 1990s. Most of the before shots of the retail storefronts date back to the mid 1980s.
Editor’s Note: Lyn sent me some comments, so I’m posting them in the appropriate places under her name.
“The aerial of the MARTA construction is from the late 1970s when they were filling in the huge hole that was dug to build the station and the tunnel. The lovely concrete elevator shaft shown on the courthouse lawn once stood in front of 111 Sycamore Street and was removed as part of some improvements completed in 1995. “
