A Little Less Green
Decatur Metro | March 10, 2008Scott reports that the trees along the median of the Courthouse Square turnaround in front of the Brick Store have been ripped up and hopes they’re just being replaced.
My guess is they’re being replaced as part of the Streetscape Improvements under the Bond Fund Projects, but can’t find a specific mention of this location.
Perhaps they were non-native trees? (like the infamous Bradford Pear)
If you have info, please comment or email me.
Just to clarify, it’s the trees up the center of the parking that have been removed. Not the trees on the sidewalk.
The trees in the center of East Court Square were planted in 1995 and haven’t done very well. The remaining trees were either dead or dying. The City worked with Trees Atlanta to identify a more appropriate species of tree to plant in the area. The existing trees were removed last week and replacement trees are scheduled to go in by the end of next week. The existing soil will be removed and replaced with an improved planting mixture that should promote better growth too.
Editor’s Note: Lyn sent me some updates, so I’m posting them in the appropriate spots under her name.
“The trees in the center were planted during the first phase of streetscape improvements in 1995 and have never thrived. The remaining ones in the center were dead or dying. We’re working with Trees Atlanta to replace them with a different species that should do better in that difficult location. We notified the retailers and other tenants along E. Court Square last week that the trees were being removed. Replacement trees should go in by the end of next week. The soil is being replaced too which should help them grow.”
