Sashya Thind Transforms New Build: Discover a Warm, Worldly Modernist Masterpiece!

Modern newly constructed homes often come with several key aspects predetermined: the direction it faces, the placement of windows, the height of the ceilings, and the arrangement of the floor plan. For Sashya Thind, the Principal Designer and Founder of her own design studio, the challenge in this 5,900-square-foot property in Weston, Massachusetts, was to use these fixed elements as a foundation to build upon rather than seeing them as limitations.

Created for a young couple, this six-bedroom home features a spacious and open design, high ceilings, and large windows that showcase the natural surroundings. Instead of dividing this openness with walls or designing a sequence of strictly defined rooms, Thind embraced the natural flow of the space, creating an interior that defines areas without the need for physical barriers.

Thind opted against using contrasting paint colors or architectural changes to delineate spaces. Instead, she strategically placed furniture, rugs, lighting, artwork, and textiles to serve as subtle indicators of space. Colorful, deeply hued rugs demarcate distinct areas on the floor. Art pieces interrupt the blank expanses of the walls, creating focal points and adding a gallery-like feel that avoids being overly formal.

The arrangement of the spaces is dynamic yet not fixed. Each area is set up to facilitate a certain aspect of life rather than conform to a specific style. Groupings of chairs promote extended conversations. Strategically positioned rugs suggest areas for entering or relaxing. Lighting and window treatments are used to scale down the vastness of the architecture, making the spaces more inviting and comfortable for actual living, not just for show.

“My aim was to craft scenarios throughout the home that focus on the usage of space and the movement through it, without resorting to thematic designs,” Thind states. This approach subtly but significantly shifts from rigid stylistic demarcations to using ambiance as a guide for activity. The home is transformed into a series of gentle prompts: to come together, to read, to enjoy the view, to appreciate art, or to simply transition smoothly from one area to another.

The use of materials plays a crucial role in making the open spaces feel cozy. Thind incorporated a palette of cotton, linen, wool, silk, leather, and warm woods throughout the home, which adds a tactile richness to the minimalist structure. These natural elements introduce a layer of softness and durability that balance the sharp lines and extensive use of glass typical of modern architecture. This also highlights the studio’s dedication to warm minimalism, which emphasizes simplicity without being stark.

The selection of furniture reinforces this concept through a global modernist lens. Pieces from Brazil, the United States, Japan, Italy, India, Scotland, and Scandinavia are thoughtfully placed throughout the home, chosen for their organic fit within the space. Each piece not only brings its own cultural backstory but also contributes to a cohesive aesthetic that emphasizes clean lines, material integrity, and understated form.

This eclectic mix enriches the home’s interior, reflecting the global dialogue that has always been a part of modern design. A piece with a Scandinavian design might be found next to an Indian artifact, while Italian elegance, Japanese minimalism, and Brazilian warmth together create a sophisticated yet accessible setting. This worldly yet harmonious blend prevents the home from feeling too eclectic or disjointed.

For Thind, this project also highlighted the importance of letting a home’s inherent characteristics guide its design. The architectural elements like windows, views, and pathways were not overwhelmed by heavy-handed additions; instead, they were enhanced through a design approach that keeps spaces open, interconnected, and flexible, well-suited to everyday living.
