Transforming Historical Quirks into Modern Living at FOKSAL Apartment
Situated in the attic of a historic tenement building from the 19th century along Foksal Street in Warsaw, Poland, the FOKSAL apartment designed by the Polish interior design studio, indoor, reimagines the traditional expectations of attic spaces. Where one might anticipate dark and cramped quarters, this apartment offers a bright, modern sanctuary.
The initial challenge faced in the design of the apartment was its unique layout, characterized by sloping ceilings, a variety of window shapes, and a complex floor plan. Rather than viewing these features as limitations, the design team leveraged them as a canvas for creativity. The renovation emphasized enhancing natural light—skylights with mirrored edges and wavy steel details were installed in the corridors, creating an illusion of openness and blending the indoor environment with the sky.
Natural illumination remains a central theme as one proceeds to the stairwell, where sunlight streams through perforated steel panels, casting evolving patterns throughout the day. The stairs lead up to a standout feature of the home: a circular dining table from MDF Italia, surrounded by the artistic Bold Chairs by Moustache, complemented by a lively, color-rich painting by Pawel Wasowski.

Adjacent to the dining area is the living room, positioned under slanted ceilings that accentuate two arched windows. The area is dominated by a curved, modular sofa from Noti, with an overhead sculptural lighting system from Vibia Plusminus, which contrasts strikingly with the clean white backdrop.
The apartment’s design continually plays with contrasts and forms. The open-plan kitchen is equipped with a stone-topped island and wooden and ceramic cabinetry, presenting a geometric juxtaposition to the angular lines of the roof above.
A Private Sanctuary High Above the City
Moving into the private quarters of the apartment, the ambiance shifts from the communal openness to a tranquil, secluded feel. The bedroom and dressing area are enveloped in warm walnut hues and soft linen, creating a peaceful retreat that feels detached from the urban rush below. The main bathroom is divided into two zones: one featuring a sleek, glass-enclosed shower and the other a minimalist, round bathtub that serves as a focal sculptural element.
Throughout the FOKSAL apartment, every architectural challenge has been transformed into a design opportunity, proving that with creativity and thoughtful design, even the quirkiest spaces can become spectacular modern homes.
