Virtually all sizable bespoke items were hoisted by a crane, maneuvered over the skyline of Manhattan, and carefully lowered into place on the top floor. This was necessary because the elevator in the vintage pre-war building was too small to accommodate them.
This particular challenge highlights the unique complexities of working within New York’s iconic early 20th-century skyscrapers, designed by Emery Roth. These structures are known for their robust walls and spacious apartments which both inspire and restrict architectural ambitions—especially when it comes to the physical introduction of design elements. Creating Unity Across Two Levels
The clients, who had purchased both the penthouse and the apartment directly below it, posed a clear challenge: transform two separate units into a cohesive family home. Galloway’s solution was implemented through meticulous millwork, featuring custom stains that flowed seamlessly between both levels, and continuous woodwork that transitioned from the floors to the walls. Marble was also strategically used to enhance this sense of connectivity, appearing in elements like window casings, built-ins, and a sculpturally carved niche in the primary bathroom.
Defining Spaces in the Great Room
In the expansive great room, the main challenge lay in defining distinct areas without overcrowding the space with furniture, which could detract from the panoramic views. Galloway’s innovative response was to integrate banquette seating into the kitchen island. This design not only merged two functional areas into one compact feature but also helped to maintain an open, fluid space throughout the room. Additionally, a unique ceiling treatment was utilized to delineate spaces—a task usually reserved for area rugs—subtly marking the transition from one functional area to another.
A Blend of Craftsmanship and Aesthetics
The kitchen’s pendant lights are not just functional but sculptural, crafted by renowned makers like Apparatus and Allied Maker, as well as through custom fixtures, placing the project firmly within the realm of contemporary American craftsmanship. Apparatus adds a touch of moody, Art Deco-inspired elegance, while Allied Maker brings a softer, handcrafted simplicity. In the bathrooms, the use of Famosa tiles and naturally veined materials create a spa-like, organic ambiance, deriving a sense of warmth from the textures of stone rather than color.
