Introducing “The Paper”: A New Spinoff from the World of “The Office”
The eagerly awaited spinoff of “The Office,” titled “The Paper,” is set to release its inaugural episode this Thursday on Peacock. The show shifts focus from the well-known Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch to a faltering local newspaper in Toledo, Ohio. While the series introduces a fresh ensemble of characters, fans of “The Office” will recognize a familiar face: Oscar Nuñez, who reprises his role as the pragmatic accountant Oscar.
In a shift of scenery but not spirit, Nuñez’s character remains largely the same, just a few years down the line and in a new city. “He’s the same guy, just trying to find his footing and make new friends in a different place,” Nuñez shared with TVLine. Although Oscar is not particularly keen on having his life documented on camera once more, he adopts a practical attitude and tolerates it, at least for the time being.
Oscar’s Seamless Transition into “The Paper”
Greg Daniels, co-creator of the show, felt that Oscar was the perfect character to transition into the new series. Throughout the nine seasons of “The Office,” Oscar maintained a consistent demeanor, characterized by his private nature and dignified presence. “He was pretty much the same person at the end of the series as he was at the beginning,” Daniels noted.

The dynamics at the newspaper shift with the introduction of Ned Sampson, the new editor-in-chief portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson. Sampson’s character stands out as a source of inspiration for Oscar, who isn’t used to having a motivational leader. This new influence encourages Oscar to take greater risks in his career, pushing him towards more engaging and purposeful work endeavors. The idea of an inspired and enthusiastic Oscar adds an intriguing element to the series, piquing the curiosity of viewers who will be eager to see how his character evolves.
