Despite his brief appearance on screen, Steve Howey’s character in High Potential has certainly sparked a lot of discussion.
In his first episode, which aired on Tuesday, Howey portrays Nick Wagner, a charismatic captain, making his entrance with a misquoted line from the Bible. Morgan was quick to notice the error and also took a jab at his peculiar mustache, asking, “What’s someone like you doing in a police station? Trying to get that mustache to make sense?”
The atmosphere turned slightly uncomfortable when Captain Wagner, clad in attire reminiscent of a classic Western antagonist, formally introduced himself as Morgan’s new boss. This introduction followed a rather unsettling remark about having heard of her, which he quickly clarified was not intended to alarm her.

Evaluating Nick Wagner
Is Nick Wagner a friend, an adversary, or something more complex? Morgan’s instincts tell her not to trust him, and Judy Reyes, who plays Selena Soto, concurs with this sentiment.
“He’s quite enigmatic and seems unreliable, don’t you think?” Reyes shared with TVLine. “He’s stepping into Soto’s territory already. The captain isn’t usually around much, but now that he’s here, it raises the question: what’s he really up to?” It’s confirmed that Morgan and Nick will butt heads as evidenced by their initial tense meeting, yet it’s surprising to hear that Nick and another character, Karadec, will form a significant working bond.
Reserving Judgement
Perhaps it’s too soon to pass judgment on the new captain. Given that Howey is now a regular on the series, it seems Nick Wagner will be a fixture in the storyline. Adopting a cautiously optimistic stance seems prudent, as we expect the initially perceived oddball to demonstrate his true worth by season’s end, throwing a few curveballs our way in the process.
“He’s an entertaining character,” Todd Harthan, the showrunner, previously mentioned to TVLine. “And I can assure you — he’s not what you’d expect.”
