End of the Road for ‘The Equalizer’

CBS has decided to pull the plug on The Equalizer, ending its run after five seasons, according to TVLine. The upcoming season finale, scheduled for this Sunday at 10/9c, will now also act as the show’s closing chapter.

This decision comes on the heels of CBS opting out of a proposed spinoff that was to feature Titus Welliver.

Looking at current season statistics, The Equalizer has managed to attract an average of 5.8 million viewers including delayed viewing up to seven days. This is a 27% drop from its fourth season. When compared to the 14 dramas aired by CBS this season, The Equalizer ranks 12th, only surpassing NCIS: Sydney and the already cancelled S.W.A.T.. These figures were not aided by the show’s new schedule, which included a later time slot at the beginning of the season, followed by another push back at midseason.

In the annual “Save One Show” poll conducted by TVLine, The Equalizer was ranked seventh.

Launched in 2021, The Equalizer stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, a former CIA operative who uses her skills to assist those in desperate need. The show portrays McCall as an ordinary single mother to the outside world, while a selected few know her as ‘The Equalizer’, a secretive savior fighting for justice and seeking personal redemption.

The series features a strong supporting cast including Tory Kittles as Detective Marcus Dante, Adam Goldberg as hacker extraordinaire Harry Keshegian, Liza Lapira as Melody “Mel” Bayani, a bar owner and sniper, Laya DeLeon Hayes as McCall’s daughter Delilah, and Lorraine Toussaint as Robyn’s aunt, Viola “Vi” Marsette.

The Equalizer now joins the list of cancelled shows at CBS this season, which includes FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International, and S.W.A.T., as well as the new comedy Poppa’s House and the reality competition The Summit. On the flip side, CBS has greenlit new projects like Boston Blue, a spinoff from Blue Bloods, CIA starring Tom Ellis of Lucifer fame, and a new comedy titled DMV featuring Harriet Dyer. The full schedule for CBS’s fall season will be disclosed next Wednesday, May 7.
