Chicago Med: Will Returns Amid Tragic Cliffhanger in 200th Episode — Plus, What Happened on Fire and P.D.

Dr. Will Halstead has made his return to Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, and he’s dealing with personal issues of his own.

In the landmark 200th episode of Chicago Med, Nick Gehlfuss reprises his role as Dr. Will Halstead — and he’s expecting a child! After moving to Seattle with Natalie at the close of Season 8, their relationship has only grown stronger. Now, with Natalie 20 weeks into her pregnancy, Will has brought their son Owen back to Chicago for some father-son bonding. (More details to follow…)

However, a trip to Gaffney always brings unexpected challenges. In the hospital parking lot, Will comes across a severely ill child. He quickly steps in to manage the boy’s medical situation, soon discovering the child is suffering from a bowel obstruction. As Will devises a medical response, the boy suddenly vanishes, leaving only his vomit with a tiny blue balloon behind; it turns out, the child was being used to smuggle 59 bags of cocaine in his stomach.

Despite Will’s valiant efforts — which include rushing the boy to the hospital, rescuing him from a locked restroom, and urging him to stay for treatment — Goodwin reminds him that he no longer works there. Will’s insistence on caring for the boy also serves as a distraction from his difficulties in connecting with his son Owen. Goodwin advises Will to embrace his role as a father instead of running away from the challenging moments of parenting.

Elsewhere in the hospital, Hannah’s pregnancy has become public knowledge, and the staff has even coined a nickname for her and Archer’s relationship: “Dasher.” Will offers his congratulations to Hannah, humorously noting that he hadn’t predicted this development. (Neither did we, Will!)

Now that the pregnancy is out in the open, Ripley and Archer openly argue over a patient’s treatment. The patient is dealing with complications from surgery to increase his height, which he underwent to impress his online girlfriend. The surgery has left him with infected scars. Ripley suggests replacing the leg implants, while Archer argues for removing the internal rods, which would make the patient shorter again. Their heated debate spills over into the operating room, where they dress in Hazmat suits and confront each other dramatically. Fortunately, like any dramatic encounter, they resolve their differences and jointly address the medical issue, with Ripley extending a congratulatory note to Archer about the baby.

The episode concludes on a tense note: the operation room where the young drug mule is being treated is stormed by a woman holding a gun, demanding the cocaine. Lenox, empowered by her own grim diagnosis, steps up to confront the armed woman, who eventually retreats. However, as the episode closes, gunshots are heard in the lobby, and back in Seattle, Natalie receives a devastating phone call informing her that Owen has been shot.
