Do you view tiles as merely decorative elements or essential functional components? The market is replete with attractive tiles ā from ceramic and marble to terrazzo and concrete ā which serve to enhance aesthetics and safeguard surfaces. However, they are rarely seen as particularly practical. This perception shifted with the advent of Unknown, Untitled‘s UU Tiles. This Paris-based studio has redefined ceramic tiles, transforming them into versatile hooks and sleek wall lamps that integrate flawlessly with the rest of the tiling while also subtly standing out.
Initiated as an exploratory project, UU Tiles developed into an extensive collection through a partnership with a traditional tile manufacturer in Normandy. This collection reexamines the conventional roles of tiles, pushing the boundaries of their functionality. In an era where design often emphasizes mobility and adaptability, allowing for frequent alterations as desired, Unknown, Untitled has chosen to focus on the durability and fixed nature of tiles, turning this into an opportunity to incorporate practical utility.

The UU Tiles collection comprises three elements: standard tiles, ceramic hooks, and ceramic wall lamps. All components utilize the same system for attachment, based on the tile structure. With uniform sizes and color schemes, these practical tiles integrate seamlessly with the decorative ones. The studio describes this as creating “a physical interface between the architecture and the living space,” making it possible to hang a coat or illuminate a corridor without disrupting the cohesive design aesthetic.
Individually, the hooks and lamps stand out as striking examples of design, showcasing a minimalist yet warm aesthetic with their glossy finishes that capture and reflect light beautifully. Each piece is available in various hues, allowing for personalization and style continuity.
The concept of permanent fixtures for storage and lighting might seem daunting. Indeed, replacing a tile involves more effort than switching a lamp or hook. However, this permanence has its merits. It promotes a deliberate approach to design that emphasizes sustainability and durability, urging us to acknowledge and respect the finite nature of our planet’s resources. In a disposable culture, choosing to invest in long-lasting elements represents a quietly revolutionary act.
For those who prefer a more minimalistic approach, it’s worth noting that both the lamps and hooks function effectively as standalone items, without the need for surrounding tiles, offering a streamlined aesthetic.
