BLOCO Architects and the Creation of Galeria House
The architectural firm BLOCO Architects has crafted the Galeria House, a sprawling 6,458-square-foot residence in Brasília, Brazil. This unique dwelling is conceptualized as a living gallery, where the inhabitants not only reside but are surrounded by their own art collection. One of the standout architectural features is the roof supported by five large inverted beams that extend across a 12-meter span, forming what is called “the gallery.” This central living space melds art with everyday life, incorporating a living room, dining area, kitchen, balcony, and even a garage.
The exterior of the house features a striking tile panel dedicated to the owner, Bárbara. This panel displays a beautiful pattern in blue and white, providing a vivid contrast against the house’s clean white walls. The colorful theme continues in the bathrooms, where walls are decked in lively hues of green, yellow, and orange tiles, consistent with the design motif found throughout the home.

Integrating Nature and Layout in Design
The layout of the Galeria House is intelligently designed for both functionality and the preservation of art. The structure incorporates two open linear gardens that not only separate but also integrate the living spaces, enhancing the connection to nature. The first garden, located near the street, is positioned between the solar protection wall and the expansive windows of the central living area. The second garden acts as a natural divider between the social spaces and the bedroom corridor.
The historical and cultural significance of Brasília is woven into the narrative of Galeria House. A renowned panel by Athos Bulcão, which was originally commissioned for a project by the famed architect Oscar Niemeyer, has been relocated to this residence. It now enhances the aesthetic of the internal garden at the entrance, with permission from the foundation managing Bulcão’s works.
The interior design, also orchestrated by BLOCO Architects, is meticulously planned to highlight the family’s art collection. Neutral materials and colors are chosen to create a calm, understated backdrop that accentuates the artworks. Additionally, custom tile panels by Brazilian artist João Henrique infuse a unique flair into the setting.
Architectural Features Protecting Art
To safeguard the precious artworks from Brazil’s intense sunlight, the architects designed a substantial wall that rises slightly above the floor, supported by pillars that align with the main beams. This feature not only protects the art but also permits a gentle, diffused natural light to filter through from the open garden, setting a peaceful tone throughout the space.
In the primary living area, a striking white counter appears to float, delineating the space while serving multiple functions as a kitchen, workspace, and dining surface. A skylight positioned directly above the counter bathes the area in daylight, enhancing the bright, airy feel of the room.
The theme of continuity and neutrality is maintained across the residence with the same brushed gray granite flooring used consistently in all areas, including the outdoor spaces and the swimming pool, ensuring a seamless visual flow throughout the property.
