The realm of ceramic lighting is evolving, showcasing innovative combinations like tiles that serve dual purposes as hooks and lighting fixtures. A recent collaboration between STUDIOTAMAT and Arianna De Luca, in partnership with Ninefifty, has taken this innovation further. Their approach integrates lighting elements directly into ceramic structures, transforming walls into radiant and decorative displays. The BALERA collection, in particular, ventures into new creative realms by blending traditional ceramic craftsmanship with avant-garde lighting design.
This collaboration marks a new endeavor under OFFTAMAT, a creative branch of STUDIOTAMAT focused on experimental design. OFFTAMAT leverages this platform to create limited-edition items that obscure the line between functionality and artistic expression. For the BALERA collection, they engaged Arianna De Luca, a designer and ceramicist from Abruzzo known for her distinctive style that marries bold shapes with modern color schemes, and Ninefifty, a ceramic manufacturer from Caltagirone committed to the advancement of traditional ceramic art. The collection is a testament to Ninefifty’s expertise in hand-glazed ceramics, De Luca’s flair for sculptural design, and OFFTAMAT’s drive to explore new uses for conventional materials.

The concept for the BALERA collection originated from a straightforward idea laid out during the initial discussions. “From the first meeting, we had a clear vision,” states Matteo Soddu from STUDIOTAMAT. “We challenged Arianna to create a wall lamp based on specific dimensions – 20×20 cm. Our goal was to delve into the versatility of surfaces, combining the lamp with simple graphic elements inspired by its contours to develop a cohesive modular tiling approach.” This concept evolved into a series of ceramic pieces where lighting and aesthetic finish share the spotlight.
The modular nature of the BALERA collection harmonizes playful geometry with meticulous craftsmanship. Each 20×20 cm tile is a component of a grid-like arrangement where flowing curves intersect with sharp lines, and the lustrous glazes reflect light brilliantly. The wall lamps fit perfectly within the tiles, their gentle illumination enhancing the subtle textures and brushwork on the ceramic surfaces. Together, these elements function as versatile units that transition smoothly between lighting, decoration, and ceramic art, converting plain walls into interactive, light-infused art pieces.
Color is crucial in defining the visual appeal of the BALERA collection. “We put significant effort into developing a cohesive color scheme,” explains De Luca. “The objective was to harmonize my personal color palette with that of Ninefifty through a process of mutual exchange and blending. We aimed for both color schemes to maintain their distinctiveness while seamlessly integrating.” The palette includes a range of hues from gentle, earthy tones to deep Mediterranean blues and greens, all finished in glossy glazes that capture and manipulate light to add depth. The embedded lighting brings these colors to life, creating dynamic shifts in ambience as natural light varies throughout the day.
The BALERA collection exemplifies how lighting, ceramics, and architectural elements can converge to create an ensemble greater than its individual parts. By embedding lighting directly within ceramic structures, STUDIOTAMAT, Arianna De Luca, and Ninefifty have produced pieces that not only attract visual interest but also invite interaction and contemplation, demonstrating that traditional materials can still surprise and captivate in new roles.
