An Asian Restaurant with a Contemporary Twist in Seoul

The Convergence of Culinary Art and Design at SSOC

Food enthusiasts who value a remarkable dining environment just as much as the cuisine itself will find much to appreciate in eateries that blend both. However, a contemporary design can sometimes feel stark and unwelcoming. This is where Design2tone steps in, introducing a design philosophy for a new dining spot that perfectly balances the elements, much like the modern Asian culinary offerings available there.

Nestled in the vibrant Seongsu district—often referred to as the “Brooklyn of Seoul”—SSOC is surrounded by a lively scene of repurposed warehouses now serving as boutiques and galleries. The restaurant itself features a dynamic metal and glass facade that houses a unique lighting installation. This installation lights up, subtly shifting its colors in tune with the changing outdoor environment, and reflects the dynamic street life.

Upon entering, patrons are greeted with a variety of textures and materials that reflect the fusion of Eastern and Western gastronomy, a specialty of chef Lee Jong-wook. The use of commercial-grade stainless steel in the front-of-house is not just practical for cleanliness, but also adds a slight luster to the space. This is beautifully contrasted with a wood-like veneer that displays an abstract natural pattern, set against classic exposed brickwork.

The restaurant’s custom tables are designed with built-in buckets, allowing guests to enjoy their chosen wines from starters through to desserts. Meanwhile, the uniquely shaped bar counter flows through the room, providing an ideal gathering spot for solo visitors and cozy group seating at larger tables.

The layout includes an open kitchen, where guests can observe their meals being prepared. It features a stylish ebony backsplash and shelves adorned with wine bottles. Every seat is strategically positioned to offer diners a comprehensive view of the culinary action.

Lighting plays a key role in setting the mood within the restaurant. By day, natural light accentuates the diverse textures and contours within the interior. By night, the lighting becomes subdued, with concentrated beams that add depth and focus on the dishes being served, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Embracing a theme of “new harmony in diversity,” SSOC offers a sensory feast, not just through its culinary delights but also through its thoughtfully designed interiors.
