At first glance, Japan and Greece may appear to be worlds apart, yet there’s a design firm that masterfully blends the intricate aesthetics of these two rich, historical cultures. Yabu Pushelberg, a design studio with roots in both Toronto and New York, has over forty years of experience in weaving together unique cultural elements into their projects, which range from expansive residential spaces to luxurious hotels and finely crafted furniture.
The newly inaugurated Onuki Restaurant, nestled in the innovative Ilisian complex in Athens, is a prime example of this synthesis. Here, the decor highlights the deep, cultural connections between Japan and Greece, enhancing the space with a blend of both nations’ traditional beauty. This venue not only emphasizes exquisite design but also celebrates the mutual respect both cultures have for sophisticated dining and high-quality gastronomy.
George Yabu, co-founder of Yabu Pushelberg, explains, “Onuki stands as a testament to the meticulous nature of Japanese cuisine and hospitality. The restaurant showcases a delicate equilibrium between historical influence and modern innovation, combining playful structural forms with precise textural details. The interplay of light and shadow is skillfully managed through the use of complexly woven screens, artistic ceiling installations, and reflective surfaces, creating an almost movie-like atmosphere that extends from the lively open kitchen to the integrated poolside terrace and further into the private dining areas on the upper floor.
The theatrical experience begins right at the entrance, where visitors are welcomed by vibrant geometric light fixtures that highlight rich dark-wood accents. Throughout the restaurant, tile patterns provide a continuous thematic link between Greek and Japanese aesthetics. A striking terracotta hue envelops the bar area, contrasting with the deep blue touches and the soft tones of limestone that characterize the external environment.
The dynamic menu at Onuki, curated by chef and co-owner Stamatis Skriapas, offers a fresh take on traditional Japanese dishes using predominantly umami-rich ingredients sourced from the Athens region. The restaurant reflects the concept of “Kizuna”—a profound bond between chef and diner, season and dish, blending tradition with modernity seamlessly in every aspect of its being.
