Drawing inspiration from Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Nautilus explores the backstory of the legendary Captain Nemo, an Indian prince who was stripped of his royal title and family. After being detained by the East India Mercantile Company, he transforms into a figure consumed by vengeance, targeting those who have wronged him.
In his quest for revenge, Nemo daringly commandeers a cutting-edge submarine from the penal colony where he is held, taking to the seas with a diverse group of escaped inmates. According to the official summary, “His goal is to unearth the mythical Viking treasure hidden at the Pillars of Halvar. However, first, he must gain his crew’s confidence and evade the relentless pursuit of the powerful East India Mercantile Company, who are determined to thwart his plans.”
The show features Shazad Latif (Star Trek: Discovery) in the role of the iconic Captain Nemo. The cast also includes Georgia Flood (Apples Never Fall) as Humility Lucas, Céline Menville (Emily in Paris) as Loti, and Thierry Frémont (Liaison) as Benoit. Notable guest stars include Richard E. Grant (Loki), Anna Torv (Fringe), and Noah Taylor (Preacher).
Originally developed and later discarded by Disney+ as part of cost-cutting measures, Nautilus was subsequently picked up by AMC in October 2023.
AMC Networks originals EVP Ben Davis shared, “Nautilus is a grand, enthralling drama that will resonate with fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other popular series like Orphan Black: Echoes.” Series creator James Dormer expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am thrilled that the hard work of everyone involved in the production will be showcased on such a respected network.”
The executive production team for Nautilus includes James Dormer, Johanna Devereaux, Chris Loveall, Colleen Woodcock, and Daisy Gilbert, with Cameron Welsh, Xavier Marchand, and Anand Tucker as producers. Michael Matthews directs the series.
