Report: Highland Bakery Opening Location at Emory University

Decatur Metro | December 9, 2013

From Tomorrow’s News Today…

Atlanta-based Highland Bakery will open a new location on the campus of Emory University early next year.  The popular intown breakfast and lunch spot will replace Einstein Bros. Bagels, which recently closed on the ground floor of the Goizueta Business School.  A recent survey posted to Facebook by the university’s newspaper the Emory Wheel sought student feedback on what should open in place of the shuttered bagel joint.  Highland Bakery was among the top recommended and subsequently “liked” options, but Atlanta-based Waffle House was the top vote-getter.

Committee Makes K-3 Zoning Recommendations, Board Scheduled to Vote Tomorrow

Decatur Metro | December 9, 2013

map7a

The K-3 rezoning committee has made their final recommendations for the rezoning that must occur in the 2014-15 school year to accommodate Westchester Elementary School.

Above is option 7A (PDF), which is the committee’s top choice map and includes tweaks recommended by the zoning committee, according to a note on the CSD website as part of tomorrow night’s School Board agenda.  The committee’s second choice is map 5 (PDF) followed by map 6 (PDF).  (There’s also an amended Map 6a which you can view in PDF or after the jump, which came out of the December 4th worksession, though it doesn’t appear to be recommended.)

Additionally, the committee is recommending that “Westchester Elementary opens with all K-3 grade levels (Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, and Third Grade) for the start of the 2014-2015 school year. This recommendation was made based on the perspective that all K-3 students would attend their assigned school zone without grandfathering in students for the 2014-2015 school year.”

The School Board is scheduled to vote on the new zoning tomorrow night at it’s monthly 6:30p meeting at Westchester.

Community Center of South Decatur Shares Position on Possible Scottish Rite Sale

Decatur Metro | December 9, 2013

The Community Center of South Decatur sent in this open letter to DM this morning…

An Open Letter from The Community Center of South Decatur (The Solarium) to the Decatur Community

The news that the former Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital property is up for sale has prompted the board of the Community Center of South Decatur (CCSD) to share our position on the possible change in ownership of this historic property.

Many long-time residents of Oakhurst are familiar with the work that the all-volunteer CCSD board has done to help restore and preserve The Solarium building and grounds, part of the historic Scottish Rite property, as a community gathering place.

As most people in the neighborhood know, the Solarium is frequently rented out for weddings and other special events. What many don’t realize is that the CCSD is a non-profit organization that plows the income raised from those events into the maintenance of this special facility.
