Emory’s Cox Hall Welcomes D.B.A. Barbecue and Twisted Taco Among Others

Decatur Metro | August 14, 2013

Emory’s Cox Hall seems to be going the route of Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, including more local restaurant options.  Good news for students, faculty and staff.  From Tomorrow’s News Today…

Twisted Taco had planned on opening near Emory Village in 2009 but those plans never materialized. The restaurant would have been on Oxford Road where Yogli Mogli, Romeo’s New York Pizza and Chipotle Mexican Grill later opened.

There are currently six Atlanta area locations of Twisted Taco including locations in Buckhead, Smyrna and Johns Creek.

D.B.A. Barbecue’s flagship and only other location is off North Highland Avenue in Virginia Highland, a few miles from Emory’s main campus.

For the full list of addition’s check out the TNT post!

Oakhurst Elementary Principal Promoted to Director of Elementary Education

Decatur Metro | August 14, 2013

As was announced at last night’s Decatur School Board meeting, Oakhurst Elementary Principal Mary Mack has been promoted to CSD’s Director of Elementary Education.  Information handed out at last night’s meeting noted Principal Mack’s impressive track record…

Mrs. Mack has 37 years of experience and has been the principal of Oakhurst Elementary for the last 22 years. Under her leadership, Oakhurst ranked fourth in the state on the GaDOE’s College and Career-Ready Performance Index, was named a Title I Distinguished School, was named a Platinum Award Winner for Greatest Gains by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement and was named a 2012 Georgia School of Excellence. During the 2012-2013 school year, Mrs. Mack developed and implemented a mentoring program for district Assistant Principals and the Dean of Students.

Additionally, just late yesterday Oakhurst Elementary was named a Georgia School of Excellence.  Here’s a PDF of the CSD press release.

In a letter to Oakhurst parents, Principal Mack thanked everyone for their support over the years and explained that it was time for her to take on a “new challenge”.  As for Oakhurst Elementary’s next steps, she writes…

For the next few months, I will remain at Oakhurst and slowly transition into my new role. By the end of September, a committee of SLT, parents and staff members will be organized to plan the search for the next principal with the process being organized and implemented through our Human Resources Department. Until a new principal has been selected, I will remain as principal of Oakhurst. After the new principal is on board, I will still be available and will continue to serve as a support. I will work diligently and collaboratively with the new leader (and spend time in my new position) on a daily basis.

Opposing Sides Speak Out in Suburban Plaza Court Case, More Potential Tenant Info Released

Decatur Metro | August 14, 2013

Selig has sent a letter, which is posted on the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association website, stating they are confident they will “prevail over Good Growth DeKalb’s attempts to stop the redevelopment of Suburban Plaza.” They continued that “Judge Tangela’s Barrie’s dismissal of our motion to intervene was not surprising and was expected. Selig has the same position as DeKalb County, so there was no reason for two sets of lawyers to stand up in court and repeat the same argument. Duane Pritchett the county attorney handling the case did an excellent job presenting the facts in response to the claim that ordinances weren’t followed when permits were issued for this project.”

Late last week, Good Growth DeKalb also sent out a letter stating that they were”…pleased with the outcome” of the judge’s decision to defer motions that the group had brought before the DeKalb County Court against the Suburban Plaza redevelopment. They noted “that their attorneys represented them with strength and clarity, and that the Judge is taking a serious look at their case. In addition to studying the zoning code, Judge Barrie is giving Good Growth DeKalb until September 1 to submit arguments against the County’s motion to dismiss specifically on the issue of standing. “Standing” refers to whether or not the plaintiffs meet the criteria for parties who have the legal right to sue.”

In addition to that, Walmart spokesperson Bill Wertz has contacted us stating that “Walmart is looking forward to Judge Barrie’s decision in this matter and remains firmly committed to the Suburban Plaza redevelopment.”

Selig’s letter also details a longer list of potential tenants at Suburban Plaza. The letter notes that Selig has already executed lease agreements with Walmart and L.A. Fitness (which will include a daycare facility).

Additionally, they state that they are in “serious negotiations” with Home Goods, Joann’s, and Ross Dress for Less “to anchor the balance of the center”. As for restaurant prospects, the only mention is of a Starbucks Coffee shop with a drive-thru.
