Decatur City Commission to Create New “No Parking” Zones Along Northern Ave and Ponce Place

Decatur Metro | August 5, 2013

In conjunction with the new traffic calming measures taken in the Ponce Terrace neighborhood over the last few weeks, the City Commission will vote this evening on creating two new “no parking” zones in the neighborhood.  One at Northern Avenue and West Ponce de Leon Avenue and the other on Ponce de Leon Place and Clairemont Ave.

According to the materials for the meeting…

The expansion of the intersection No Parking requirements is directly associated with the criteria established in the State of Georgia Code, Title 40, Chapter 6, Article I0 Part 1, Section 40-6-203 (a) (2) (D), known as the “Uniform Rules of the Road”. This Code section establishes that there shall be No Parking “Within 30 feet upon the approach to any flashing signal, stop sign, yield sign, or traffic control signal”. To effectively control parking and comply with this standard No Parking needs to be established on both sides on the street at such intersections. At the 2 intersections referenced above No Parking restrictions would need to be increased in length beyond the State Code criteria to address the location o f the traffic calming median islands

Read more about it in tonight’s agenda materials HERE.

UPDATE: DPD – Resident Report of Armed Robbery was Actually a Suspect Fleeing From Arrest Warrant

Decatur Metro | August 5, 2013

UPDATE II: From DPD…

On 08/05/13 at approximately 10:24 am, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputies were attempting to serve an arrest warrant at a residence in the 200 block of Cambridge Avenue when the wanted person fled on foot toward Oakhurst Park and deputies pursued.  A taser was deployed and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.  The suspect and a deputy were treated on scene for superficial injuries.

UPDATE: DPD’s Jennifer Ross says…”Standby for the real story…it was NOT a robbery and/or shooting.”  Stay tuned.

—————-

Waiting to hear back from Decatur PD, but Arriba reports “gunshots and an attempted robbery near Oakhurst Park this morning (possibly on Leyden.)”  He says that his wife “called 911, and the police were there immediately.  They apprehending one suspect, the other one got away.”

He also followed up to report that “the police dispatcher called my wife back and said there was a second incident on Cambridge, also to make sure these weren’t the same incidents.”, so there could have been two events this morning.

Anne also wrote in and reported “my friends were playing tennis and saw the robbery in progress, heard shots, and called 911 leading police to the house.

Stay tuned.  We’ve followed up with Decatur PD and will let you know when we hear back.
