Abandoned Dog Needs a Home

Decatur Metro | October 18, 2012

This isn’t Decatur specific, but I figured some of you might be able to help this pooch.  From Frogs to Dogs Facebook page…

One of our clients who happens to be an Atlanta Police Officer has asked me to post this dog.

Hi Everyone,

This is Nash. She doesn’t know that though. She was left at an abandoned vacant house in SW Atlanta (at the corners of Bolton Rd and Nash Rd) almost two months ago and has taken to the property, never leaving it. Rumor has it that she was good friends with a dog that had lived there but the tenants took their dogs and left her. Police and neighbor’s have put down food and water and she sleeps on the below steps huddled up in a ball. She is very sweet and will take treats out of your hand and even give you a quick hand kiss. She is a Rottie mixed with Shepherd I believe and is under a year. She was emaciated when we first had contact with her but she is being fed regularly and is looking much better.

The problem you ask? The owner of the property is now rehabbing it and has put up for rent signs. He has painters over there every day. I spoke to one of them yesterday and he said that the owner wants to call the “pound”. The painters won’t do it as she is so sweet and stays to herself. The neighbor’s don’t want FCAC (Fulton County Animal Control) to pick her up either. I don’t think there is a lot of time before he gets tenants in. I have a full house or I would welcome her in. I am hoping that everyone can PLEASE forward this on and maybe someone would want her. I will cover all her vet expenses (shots, fixed, flea and heart worm preventative, etc). My phone number is 404-217-1168. This dog is a SURVIVOR and deserves a loving home. PS I have seen her around a stray cat on the property and she has no problems with it.

Report: Asheville’s Tupelo Honey Looking For Spot in Decatur

Decatur Metro | October 18, 2012

OK, now this is just getting ridiculous.  Tomorrow’s News Today reports…

The Asheville favorite [Tupelo Honey] has been serving southern favorites in since 2000, and recently started to expand their concept. The restaurant opened a second Asheville location in early 2010 and just opened their first out-of- state location in Knoxville, Tennessee earlier this week.

Not surprisingly, sources say that Decatur is the likely local target for the restaurant’s planned Atlanta area expansion. I had the pleasure of dining at their original location earlier this summer, and would describe the restaurant as a cross between the original Flying Biscuit Cafe and Another Broken Egg Cafe.

Decatur and Asheville sittin’ in a tree.  How long do you think before John Kessler writes a Decatur/Asheville article for the AJC Sunday paper?

Decatur Now Officially “Bike Friendly”

Decatur Metro | October 18, 2012

Decatur, once braved only by the most daring cyclists, has apparently made enough inroads to improve its bike infrastructure to receive “official” designation.

Decatur Active Living’s Cheryl Burnette writes on the Be Active Decatur blog that the city has been designated a “bike-friendly community” (bronze level) by the League of American Bicyclists.  Here’s a quote from League President Andy Clarke, via the Be Active blog…

“We are excited that the City of Decatur recognizes that simple steps to make biking safe and comfortable pay huge dividends in civic, community and economic development’.  Bicycling is more than a practical, cost effective solution to many municipal challenges – it’s a way to make Decatur a place where people don’t just live and work, but thrive.”

Cheryl points out our new bike lanes, bike racks, sharrows, bike stores and valets.  (I can’t believe she forgot the first crowd-sourced bike rack!) What additional bike improvements would you like to see in the COD?
