According to The Decatur Minute, construction of the Oliver House along Commerce Drive is now complete and seniors are moving in. The building includes 80 units.

With the first two phases of the redevelopment of Allen Wilson Terrace now complete, the final, construction of the third phase of 71 units of family housing could begin as early as January 2013, dependent on funding.

The new building includes a library but they need books to fill the shelves. If you have gently used books to donate for the library in the Oliver House or if you have a library background and would be willing to help create and organize this new library, please contact Melvin Whitlock, resident services supervisor, 404-373-4491 ext. 12, or [email protected], to sign up to volunteer or to make arrangements to drop off books.

The City of Decatur Police Department is participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, September 29, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is an event where citizens can turn in unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs so they can be safely disposed of.

In April 2012, citizens turned in a record-breaking 552,161 pounds (276 tons) of unwanted or expired medications for safe and proper disposal at the 5,659 take-back sites that were available in all 50 states and U.S. territories.

Prescription drug abuse continues to be a national battle. Properly disposing of unused medication will ensure the medication is disposed of properly. If you would like to dispose of any unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs, please bring them to the Decatur Police Department between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2012.
