Decatur Road Conditions – Friday Edition
Decatur Metro | January 14, 2011Let’s hope that this is the last one of these posts we’ll need for a long time!
If you’re just visiting this site for the first time, this post is here for neighbors to help each other out and report on Decatur-area road conditions.
My next door neighbor said it took her two hours to get home driving along Monroe and Ponce last night at about 7 p.m.
Hell yes. Ponce was completely terrible last night. Took me over two hours to drive from Freedom Parkway to Great Lakes.
Drove a bunch yesterday, Mead road and most of Oakhurst business district (Oakview, East Lake) is good, College is decent going west, Dekalb also good going west, east was another story because of the shade from the train platform. Venturing out in a bit – we will see
came home last night from work after midnight, and lo and behold, a sand truck was dumping sand on the ice on my street. finally!
Hill on Glenn Cir sanded overnight also.
Took Marta downtown, so can’t speak to those roads. On my walk from the Peachtree Center Marta Station to my building there were several cars stuck on the downtown streets, just spinning their wheels and sliding around Peachtree and the side streets. Still a mess.
The commute from Decatur to Dunwoody wasn’t terrible. Took about an hour. 78 E ramp onto 285 isn’t in very good shape, but otherwise things were pretty clear. Aside from the idiots trying to go 75 out there and then slamming on their brakes.
Ditto– on 78 with the morning glare it was hard to tell what was ice and what was sand. Also, if you are merging from 285 west onto 400 north, look out, because the entrance lane (which turns into the right lane on 400) is impassable, meaning you have to merge from ice into 65 mph traffic.
College and Dekalb were decent going west this morning, and people were making the turn up the ramp onto Blvd to get to the connector.
I avoided the ice sheet at the Pencil Factory, traffic looked like it was struggling there, and took a left on Grant over to MLK.
Grant was a bit icey but there was virtually no traffic on it so not a big deal to get through.
MLK is sanded and great.
Big event at the Mart this weekend may make for weird traffic.
have heard it was very slow going on downtown Atl streets this morning from co-workers (I took train). Train provided the contrasts of this week– a Mart particpant wearing her mink coat (on MARTA?!), and a father-son Green Bay Packer fan arrival, wearing shorts! The cold is definitely relative.
I have event at movie theater at Ponce (is that about at Highland) this evening I want to go to. Not sure if it is wise or not to venture out with Ice likely after some melting today. Thoughts?
Plaza Theatre is at Ponce and Highland – I’d probably avoid Ponce in case it is still a madhouse and go McLendon to Moreland. If North is clear, you can turn up hill on North, right on Highland, and then turn left into the back parking lot from Highland without ever getting on Ponce.
How are the sidewalks looking? Particularly along Candler? We’re planning on a trip to Raging Burrito this afternoon–had hoped to take MARTA, but it doesn’t look like the #15 is running.
Just attempted to drive down Ponce in hopes of getting to Piedmont or Peachtree. One lane partially clear until you get to unincorporated Dekalb — a total mess thereafter. Atlanta police have Ponce completely closed off at Oakdale, which forces you to turn off. All side streets in Druid Hills are covered with ice and people are driving like idiots. Made it back up to N. Decatur and came home. I’m still seeing snow-covered cars turning out of Great Lakes onto Clairemont. Please clean your cars off before hitting the roads.
Note to SFmaster: I was planning to go the Plaza tonight too. Unless some major plowing or sand dumping is done between now and later this afternoon, Ponce is off limits for me. If anyone has a different experience on Ponce later today, please advise.
Headed down Ponce to Crawford Long last night- traffic into Decatur was a parking lot at both 6 pm and 10 pm. May be the same tonight….
Your DeKalb Farmer Market is WONDERFUL!!
They cleared the entire parking lot!
I a little worried driving in yesterday as all the parking lots I have been in the last couple of days have been scary (even the baby Kroger was very slippery last night)
But the Farmers Market actively cleared their lot of all ice and snow!! and the place was fully stocked and lite on customers so getting in and out was amazingly fast!
Thanks Farmer’s Market!
If it works for your drive – take Dekalb Industrial to Dekalb industrial way (pass wag-a-lot) to cut over to Ponce to avoid the ice on Ponce at Avonadale station.
Happy Shopping!
Thanks Maureen: With that report I think it will be a no go for me. I am very sad about that as I have been eager to see the film. But being forced off Ponce onto potentially more risky side streets doesn’t sound good.
Does anyone know if there are any plans for the Waldorf school to reschedule this film at the Plaza theater tonight? Or offer refunds? I have looked at the emails I received regarding tickets and couldn’t find info on that.
Memorial all the way to boulevard is in very good shape right now. Boulevard is also very clear. This may be a good alternative to ponce or dekalb for those trying to get towards downtown.
How is college or dekalb avenue – thinking I could do those to moreland and then get to plaza if better than ponce
SFMaster…it’s melting pretty fast now, and the sun is going full tilt! Tonight’s event at the Plaza should be pretty easy…!
DeKalb Ave should be fine, just be careful on the exit to Moreland, and at the intersection of Oakdale. If you turn left on North from Moreland, you can then take a right on N. Highland, and into the Plaza complex, no Ponce.
Any reports on North Ave from Moreland to Midtown?
North Avenue is okay but both North and Ponce are packed with people> The cops had part of Ponce blocked off a couple hours ago.
Dekalb is ok westbound but the eastbound lanes are much more shaded in places and a little worse, as some have mentioned earlier. Not sure about those ramps for getting from dekalb onto Moreland. Has anyone gone this way?
Hey guys, I wanted to thank you all for your postings. They’ve helped me hugely in deciding where my husband and I can safely go. To the Decatur Metro organizer and all of you — this is really an example of a community coming together and helping each other. On that note, I’m headed to the Emory Commons Publix….
Has anybody been on Clairmont in the past hour or two? Or been on LaVista or Piedmont heading up towards Chastain?
Still on the fence so eager to hear some more rush hour posts.
I’ve got to drive up Clairmont to Chamblee. Anybody been that way? It usually takes me 20-30 minutes, but I wonder….
Clairmont passable but very slow right now.
It appears that the Decatur Police have blocked off the eastbound side of Ponce at Commerce by SunTrust. That side of the street was still icy when I walked it at 1:00PM. It must have gotten worse.
Anyone know how dekalb ave is now for the drive from downtown?
Anyone drive towards the airport from Decatur? Trying to decide whether or not to go pick up our (pregnant) visitor late tonight, or leave her to take Marta. Thanks!
I would also like to know this.
Heard from a friend today that they had done a late night pick up last night at airport (from over around Shallowford) and it was okay.
Thanks!
PS – Colleagues say the Marta stations are very icey, would be afraid of fall for pregnant visitor.
Agreed. Picked my wife up from the East Lake MARTA station just blocks from our house this evening due to ice.
Drove home tonight from downtown/capitol on Memorial, to East Lake Y, up East Lake Terrace to Oakview to Jefferson. Few ice patches on memorial and drivers going too fast, East Lake Y to Oakview totally clear, Oakview patchy but ok, Jefferson Ok all the way up to College. SO relieved not to be on Ponce for 2.5 hours again!
Husband just drove to Fed Ex HQ out Covington Hiway, reports patches of chunky ice, not too bad to drive on, but sheer mayhem at Fed Ex. Big surprise there.
