    Decatur City Schools Closed Tuesday

    Decatur Metro | January 10, 2011

Just received word from CSD’s Bruce Roaden that Decatur schools will indeed join the growing list of school systems that will be closed again on Tuesday.

From all the weather reports, this looks like it could go on all week.  Ugh.

There’s big wahoos among the students in this house….but this is going to get tough for working parents without a lot of stored leave….

Totally enjoyed my time with the kids this morning…though teenager is off for more exciting environs north of the tracks…love being a teacher!

Okay, we’ve gone sledding, made cookies, played games and need indoor activities for energetic boys tomorrow. Help!

Does Decatur have a snow plow?

Or salt/sand? I hate what salt and sand do to the cars and environment but it’s the only way to melt ice on the streets if it doesn’t warm up.

I don’t recall seeing a snowplow when Decatur 101 toured public works.

Can you imagine what the most frugal among us would say if Decatur bought a five-figures snow plow??

          Don’t even think about it.

c’mon – you just plop a Fisher plow on a garbage truck – what could that cost – I’ll check…

You don’t plow ice. Go buy some chains. Just think of the greenhouse gases that aren’t put into the air.

Police cruisers have been circulating with chains. Has to have some effect on the ice…good or bad I can’t tell, but it seems to break through this crusty stuff.

Looks like someone(s) had lots of fun spinning donuts in parking lots Monday morning, too.

      Kennesaw state is closed too

Can’t we just buy ONE plow, attach it to a truck and get it to work – this is pretty crazy that all we can do is hope for a thaw.

Hmmm, re makeshift plow: I’m pretty sure that a plow isn’t what we need right now. A plow is for big piles of snow that have to be moved aside. But what we’ve got here is a relatively thin layer of hard-packed ice and snow that a plow blade can’t easily and quickly push aside. I think salt, sand, and/or warm weather are what is required to make the roads passable.

Most feds closed again on Tuesday. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before, the feds closed two days in a row in Atlanta. Ice is way more dangerous and disruptive than snow. Some investment in sand and salt may be in order. Maybe we should keep the Beach Party sand after we use it in June…. :)

      The sand idea is brilliant!

The Feds being closed as far as VAMC is concerned is only the outpatient clinics and groups.

Do you think we will be out all week? I assume this will add a week to our end of the year calendar if so? Bummer!

Does anyone know how CSD will make up these 2 days???

Re the feds, the Atlanta Federal Center (downtown at 5 Points) is closed but telework is being required. I don’t believe it has closed before, usually just get a delayed start. CDC campus is also closed.

I THINK the snow days are built into the calendar year already (see earlier post by DM). I could be wrong. I think this is one reason why the children start so early. If no snow, the extra days sure can’t hurt. Anyone correct me if I’m wrong.
