Damon, Paltrow, and Winslet Movie Filming at Emory & CDC Today

    Decatur Metro | January 6, 2011

UPDATE: AJC is now reporting that part of the movie may be filmed in downtown Decatur.  Will check with the city for any known specifics.

No one has yet confirmed which – if any – of these big-name thespians is actually on-location at Emory and/or the CDC today, but On Location Vacations reports and Fox5 confirms that the movie “Contagion“, about a “deadly disease and the team of doctors at the CDC tasked to contain it”, is indeed filming at the University and adjacent CDC campus today.

So Emory & CDC folks – and I know there are a bunch of you out there! – feel free to write in with your eye-witness reports, rumors and gossip.  It’s all good.  Feed the beast!

That must be the cause of the tremendous traffic jam on Clifton and Briarcliff this morning. It was backed up and at a stop all the way to North Druid Hills Rd. That is my eyewitness report.

Saw military vehicles and men on my way past the CDC this morning. Thought it might be a drill, but I’d be willing to bet they are part of the movie.

Laurence Fishburne is here today. He plays the CDC Director.
I escorted Kate Winslet around here several weeks ago. She isn’t here today. Must of been something I said….

“On Thursday, January 6, 2011, CDC Roybal Campus will experience traffic congestion related to planned filming for a motion picture. Between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. film and production crews are expected to be on a number of locations on the Roybal Campus including the main entrance (filming crowd at a mock protest), the Visitors Center parking area, and the entrance to Building 21 from Louise Martin Drive. You are encouraged to use the Houston Mill Road/Michael Street entrance during this time to avoid delays getting on campus.”

They were filming a protest scene at the CDC main entrance on Clifton around 12:30. The protesters were wearing face masks and there were armored (military style) and guards with rifles scattered about. There were also a good number of fake news crews with their vans around.

When I went past the main entrance this morning, I thought it was some kind of protest underway!

Was security sacrificed as the price of having the CDC portrayed in a big budget movie?

      Love love love Kate Winslet!

    8. Sage says:

Actually, security is better because of the filming.
And Kate was nice. She plays an EIS officer in the movie.

Are you as hot as Matt Damon? ‘Cause if you are, I might be tempted to cyber-stalk you, despite the handicap of your political leanings… :-P

I cannot imagine the hoops that must have been jumped through to film on the Roybal campus. Funny, as when there have been real protests outside CDC they’ve not gotten past the entrance on Clifton. No way they’d make it near the doors of Building 21 in reality.

    11. Sage says:
      January 6, 2011 at 3:01 pm

I think the bld 21 shot is just the Director entering the building, not a mob scene.
And they won’t let them film ANY lab building. Not even the exteriors…
(its where we keep the Zombies).

Anyone see Matt Damon at Parkers today? Carl points out on Twitter than a commenter on AJC claims they just saw him hanging out there.

Here’s a direct link to the comment.

at 1pm there were about 10 “policemen”—some wearing masks—-waiting patiently at the cross walk to cross the street. a bit disturbing until I noticed the film cameras. no star sightings, however!

in 1989, a very young matt damon filmed a scene on the old
bridge over the creek along the bike trail at the corner of south
mcdonough st and oakview road. it was a tnt movie called “Rising
Son”. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100497/ film crew worked all
night to get a 45 second night scene on the bridge. matt damon and
actress emily longstreth kissing on the bridge, then little
argument, and she walks away the bridge made of steel pipe and
painted green was later replaced, when the bike trail was built in
