Diner Passing Out Menus, But Final Inspections Haven’t Been Requested

    Decatur Metro | January 6, 2011 | 10:41 am

Yesterday morning, Marianne wrote in with a report that Decatur Diner was passing out menus in front of its location on East Ponce, and had told her that they would probably be open next Monday or Tuesday.  Based on past estimated openings given by Diner employees, she was skeptical, but passed along the “news” to us.

I followed up with the city yesterday and was told that not only had a “certificate of occupancy” not yet been issued to Decatur Diner, but according to the city’s Building Official Rick Logan, final building, plumbing and fire inspections hadn’t even yet been requested by the Diner’s owners.  All inspections must be approved by the city before a business can apply for a “certificate of occupancy” and open its doors.

So bottom-line: a next Monday or Tuesday opening seems unlikely.

Seeing as the silverware has been on the tables for several months, I suggest that if you are among the first to try the place, you ask for a fresh set.

I now believe that the Decatur Diner is a front for extraterrestrials to study us pending an invasion. Look to the sky!

      Proudly moderated since 2009!

I would like to see the menu though… could not find a website or menu online.

Again – who cares? Go when there are people inside and the sign says “Open.” I have yet to understand why people care so much about this.

I don’t think it’s that people care so much. No one would even notice if it weren’t in that particular location, but many of us see it everyday and are just curious at what their deal is. It’s more comical speculation at this point that people are just having a little fun with. Lighten up!

Also, residents are being told many different things by workers about when it will open. Whether they’re being purposefully misled or not is up for interpretation, but bottomline is that people are confused. Providing them with actual facts hopefully clarifies things a bit.

As for previous posts reporting “sightings” inside the diner, you can certainly ask “who cares?” And the answer is a heck of a lot of people. As one who can see the click-thru rates, I’ll just say that these diner posts have a staying power like few other topics.

        It gives my life meaning.

I saw about six men in their the other night that looked like they were playing cards. I have become obsessed with looking in that place every time I drive by – with the certain result that I will have a wreck there soon.

Maybe they were extraterrestrials playing cards.

Which brings us to the question… How will the extraterrestrials fit in with the masses of zombies already inhabiting Decatur.

And the next question.. how long before someone drives by Decatur Diner and sees Elvis?

Maybe they are zombie aliens from Greece?

I care! I drive past it every day and would like to see the space bustling with people. I’d like a new place to eat. And I’d like the space to start generating revenue for the city.. Lots of reason to care!

I think I might bring in my own silverware the first time I eat there.

Seriously, once (if ever) they open there should be a Decatur Metro Freaks/Lovers/Readers “Meet Up” at the Diner to welcome our new neighbors. We should all dress up in our best Halloween costumes. It would be a riot.

Yes, and we would all have to ride our bicycles of course! If anyone asks me who I am though, I would definitely change my name. I would be DM, or Steve, or Cuba. Actually I’m sticking with Cuba, everyone likes her. No one would ever believe I’m nice enough to be Deanne

Wasn’t the first pint at Leon’s auctioned off for a good bit of money? How about auctioning off the first 3am omelette at Decatur Diner?

My 4 year old makes a comment about the Diner not being open every time we drive by it. A few days ago she said it was taking the diner a long time to open because it was a big place and they had a lot of tables to clean. This morning she guessed it would be open by summer or maybe spring. I’ll keep y’all posted if she finds out any more news.

I care because I live in Decatur and that’s prime real estate for something that could be awesome…but we’re stuck with nothing instead. Imagine that outdoor seating at night after a long night at the Brickstore.

What irks me is asking the owner when it will be open and being told “2 weeks” when the plumbing hasn’t even been finished for 5 months after that. Would it be hard to slap something on the door that says “Coming this spring” if not an actual opening day?
