Universal Joint and Oak Grove Market Opening “Oakhurst Market” This Spring

Decatur Metro | December 23, 2010

Marc Brennan confirms with DM that the owners of Universal Joint and the Oak Grove Market up on LaVista Road have teamed up to open the “Oakhurst Market” in the old RealSource space in downtown Oakhurst by March 2011.

You want details.  We got details. Straight from Mr. Brennan…

The market will be a small community market with a butcher on sight for our meat, chicken, and seafood program including our own sausage and a wide range of meat including all natural and grass fed products. The market will also provide: fresh produce from local farms, fresh prepared foods for both individuals and families, limited amount of essential grocery items, deli meats, fresh baked bread, a cheese program, a yogurt station, beer, and wine.

Marc welcomes any and all feedback from the community as to what other items they would like offered at the new market.

Decatur Shoots For LEED Gold Certification with Fire Station #1

Decatur Metro | December 23, 2010

Not to be outdone by its smaller sibling to the south, Decatur’s Fire Station #1 will attempt LEED Gold certification with its coming redesign.

In a Project Description submitted to the Decatur City Commission this past Monday night (page 36 of the Materials), Deputy City Manager Hugh Saxon noted that in addition to needed repairs like a new roof, gutters, downspouts, windows, overhead doors, mechanical and electrical systems, kitchen, dormitory, locker and bathrooms, the city will shoot for LEED Gold status with Fire Station #1 by implementing geothermal mechanical equipment, a gray water system to reduce water usage, along with other energy saving features.

Decatur’s new Fire Station #2 in Oakhurst achieved LEED Silver status upon completion last year.

Prescription Medication Disposal

Decatur Metro | December 23, 2010

Looch writes in…

Does anyone know where I can get rid of expired prescription medications so I’m not dumping antibiotics down the drain and risking their introduction into the water system?

This FDA site states that many drugs listed on the page can be flushed down the toilet, even though there have been recent “reports” of trace amounts of medicines leaching into area water supplies.  Lovely!

With that in mind, does anyone know of any drug disposal locations around Decatur?

CSD To Set Aside Up to 10 Tuition Slots for Children of Decatur Employees

Decatur Metro | December 23, 2010

Included in a “Memorandum of Understanding” between the City Schools of Decatur and the city of Decatur primarily focused on the joint maintenance facility that will be built at Talley Street in the coming months is an agreement between the two parties that CSD will “set aside ten spaces for use by non-resident City employees at the same tuition rate as children of CSD teachers.”

According to a letter from City Manager Peggy Merriss (page 59 of the meeting materials) to the City Commission the agreement will “address a long-standing request by our employees to be able to send their children to City Schools of Decatur and will provide a recruitment and retention incentive for our employees.”

That is indeed a good incentive!
