Where Ya Headed?
Decatur Metro | June 16, 2010
According to Forbes, 10 million Americans moved in 2008.
And while we know blanket facts like “the city of Atlanta is growing in population”, it’s difficult to get a sense of where these folks are coming from. Also, what about the much-less-discussed people leaving the city? Where are they inclined to move?
Luckily Forbes magazine has created a great, new interactive map that shows the in and out-migration patterns for every county in the country. Above is the map for Fulton County, representing “Atlanta”. Check out that Northeast/Rust Belt/Florida in-migration!
And who knew that most people who left Atlanta went decidedly west? (Also note the thick red line indicating outward migration down to New Orleans from Atlanta.)
And if you think Atlanta is fascinating, check out Manhattan, Seattle and Dallas. Or any other county in the U.S. that strikes your fancy!
Just don’t miss Detroit. It’s a visual bloodbath.

Fascinating! Clearly, most everyone wants to live in Seattle.
People love rain and throwing fish!
Followed by awesome coffee!
And great Asian food! And great contra (folk) dancing! And great outdoor gear! And great views of the ocean and the Olympic and Cascade Mountains! And great kayaking! And great hiking! And nearby cross-country skiing! The Northwest is the best!
Come on Karass, don’t you think 99 degrees with a heat index of 120 and hazardous air quality is so much better than all that? : ) My internal debate about why we in fact live here always kicks in this time of year…
I’m afraid to say more. I might get the infamous “If you don’t like it here, you can just leave…” But on those nights when even a pool isn’t refreshing, I might just respond “Send me a prepaid moving truck to Portland or Seattle!”
Take me too, Karass! But why are we still here? Family? Jobs? Never meant to stay so long. Not that I don’t like it here, it is oh-so-cozy and lovely in Decatur, but my heart will always be in the NW.
I can dig wanting to move to Seattle– if it weren’t for the weather, that would be one of the few places on the West coast I’d consider living! (We Cubans, however, being tropical folk, don’t like the cold. Why there are so many of us in New York City, I’ll never fathom.)
- Jobs, but jobs exist elsewhere as well, it’s just harder to obtain them from a distance
– Family members who know no better and may not do so well with sudden change
– Life in Decatur IS fairly comfortable, easy, and familiar which may be the enemy of new, stimulating, and awesome.
To funny for Seattle is where I moved when I left Decatur for awhile.
Looks like the only people moving to Detroit are 200 people from Norfolk, VA.
Did the US Navy move a 200-person office from Norfolk to Detroit in 2008?
Probably ACORN workers continuing the Democratic success story that is Detroit.
*heavy sigh* Davo, seriously, dude– do you have more than one note?

Stupid Democrats and their “cities”.
DM is using the ‘s’ word again…
That’s a dime according to Ms. Kuebler, Principal Emeritus of the free state of Westchester Elementary, and I already owed DM a dime so we’re even.
Stupid DM can’t even follow his own rules!
When did stupid become such a dirty word? Sometimes we all are stupid and sometimes stupidity needs to be pointed out.
I think the principal and teachers of Westchester Elementary just got sick of the lack of imagination and banality of their young name-callers. There was no charge for “sophmoric” or “ludicrous”.
me gusta “pedantic”…
