Kaiser Opens Downtown; Gives $10k To Farm-to-School
Decatur Metro | January 27, 2010Kaiser’s grand-opening of it’s downtown Decatur location tomorrow on Friday and if you’re big into hob-nobbing, it’s the place to be!
This Friday, Jan. 29 at 8:30 AM, Kaiser Permanente will open its new medical office in Downtown Decatur (ground level of the Artisan building at 201 W. Ponce De Leon and Commerce Dr.). You are cordially invited to attend the grand opening.
Dignitaries from state and county institutions will be on hand, including State Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver; DeKalb County Commissioner Jeff Radar; County Commission CEO Burrell Ellis; Bill Floyd, Mayor of Decatur; Jackie Ginn, president of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce; and Scott Drake, president of the Decatur Business Association.
In conjunction with the opening, Kaiser has donated $10,000 to the Decatur Education Foundation, which according to a DEF press release will be used to “seed” the Farm-To-School program and…
…help train more than two dozen Decatur teachers in developing curriculum plans that include lessons from Farm to School, as well as provide them with much-needed materials.
Funds will also enable low-income students and families – up to 100 people – to attend a series of workshops, where they will learn to grow vegetables, plan for garden space and gain new knowledge about family farming. The workshops will be provided through a partnership between Oakhurst Community Garden and the city’s Active Living Department.
I wish tomorrow was Friday.
Kaiser needs to do something about their window-box wheelchair closet. What should be their most important face to the community (their front window) is in fact their closet. While I can appreciate the metaphors of open closets and Decatur, it just seems lazy and disrespectful to the community. Put a window display of some sort in there… mannequins demonstrating the use of birth control products or a countdown clock of the number of uninsured people in the country… anything but an empty closet with a lonely wheelchair. I can’t imagine this treatment even in a stripmall.
Guess this is the ceremonial grand opening, as the office has actually been open since mid-December.
I went there recently for a pediatric appointment and was very disappointed with the wait. We had to wait forever to get into a room, then again to actually see the doctor, and then again to get shots. We didn’t leave until 2.5 hours after our scheduled appointment time, which is extremely stressful with a small child. I’m chalking it up to grand opening disorganization and keeping my fingers crossed that they get it together before our next appointment. Hope others have had better experiences.
Also, a tip for those with upcoming appointments – the receptionist will validate parking in the Artisan parking garage. It’s not really advertised on the garage entrance or on the KP office windows. We originally parked at a meter but ended up having to move the car to the garage due to the loooooong wait.
I’m glad to see they have donated to DEF for the farm-to-school program!
Dear Harpua, I am the Director of Sales and Account Management for Kaiser Permanente. I read your posting and I am obviously very concerned with your experience. It is unacceptable. I would like more information, Date / time of appointment and Doctor, so I can see where the breakdown occured and make sure this does not happen again.
I can be reached at (404) 949-5180 office or mobile 404-423-5901 (anytime),
Please give me a call or e-mail
I hope to hear from you soon.
I live on the other side of the Dekalb Farmer’s Market. Thinking driving just a tad bit further out to the location near Northlake will simply be easier from a parking standpoint. Doubt we’ll go to the Decatur location.
