How Can I Earn Money For My School System?

Decatur Metro | January 26, 2010

Karass and Macarolina recently requested a post where we could compile a list of passive and easy ways of earning free money for our respective schools.  A great idea!  So here ’tis.

Karass got the ball-rolling with the following suggestions.  I’ve added links where applicable.  Comments in parentheses are Karass’, italics are mine.

  • Publix Partner Cards (best lucrative/ease of use ratio)  Can anyone find a link?
  • Boxtops for Education (very popular with kids; also good L/EU ratio)  Clip box tops from a list of participating products, bring them to your school’s “box top coordinator’ and earn 10 cents a top!
  • Target Red or Visa Cards (lucrative but less used) You must apply for a check or credit card.  1% of purchases go to your school of choice.
  • Georgia Natural Gas True Blue Schools (very lucrative but few know about it) “Very lucrative” is right.  And easy!  If you’re already a Georgia Natural Gas customer, just pick your school of choice and they automatically donate $5 a month ’til the end of time!
  • Campbell’s Labels for Education (less useful; yields prizes not $) Clip Campbells UPCs, mail them in, earn “great merchandise”.

Have other suggestions?  Tell us below and I’ll add them to this list!

An Idle Truck Makes the Devil’s CO2

Decatur Metro | January 26, 2010

From Agnes Scott’s Communication Office…

Trucks and service vehicles won’t be able to keep their engines humming while at Agnes Scott College—the college is the first educational institution in Georgia to prohibit idling on campus, according to The Clean Air Campaign, a not-for-profit organization that works with partners, Georgia employers, commuters and schools to encourage actions that result in reduced traffic congestion and improved air quality.

Trucks and service vehicles on campus will now be required to turn off their engines while making deliveries. “No Idle Zone” signs will be placed in the three areas where service and delivery vehicles frequently operate while on campus.Drivers will be expected to cut off their engine upon arrival and restart engines only after loading or unloading is complete and the vehicle is ready to depart. The new policy excludes safety and emergency vehicles, electric vehicles and trailer engines used solely to control freight temperatures.

Fire Damages “Our Way Cafe”; Recovery Fund Opened

Decatur Metro | January 26, 2010

This past Saturday, “Our Way Cafe” in the Avondale Estates’ Twin Oaks strip mall on E. College Avenue suffered damage from a fire caused by a clothes dryer motor.  Tweets from @stacyreno and @danayoung, sent Dave and Geoff to the scene where they documented the damage.

While initial eyewitness accounts reported minimal damage, Dave followed up yesterday with news that the “kitchen and walk-in areas were destroyed and smoke damage throughout.”

Dave also reported yesterday that a “fire recovery fund” had been opened at Decatur First Bank.  Here are the details from Rob Elrod…

We have set up a Fund for Ava Marie’s Our Way at Decatur First.

Please ask folks to make checks payable to: Our Way Cafe Recovery Fund with an ATTN: Ms. Ann Berg on the checks. The checks can be sent to the bank at 1120 Commerce Drive, Decatur, GA 30030.
