Hey Decatur Metro Peeps, Will It Snow?

Decatur Metro | January 6, 2010

From what I can tell, every weather person out in the metro is currently in full bet-hedging mode regarding the possibility of Atlanta snowfall and accumulation tomorrow afternoon into the evening.

So instead of planning your day around statements like “ACCUMULATIONS OF SNOW ARE POSSIBLE“, why not just listen to a random poll of anonymous neighbors?

The Avett Brothers Give Props to Eddie’s Attic & DeKalb Public Library

Decatur Metro | January 6, 2010

I know I sometimes (read: often times) mess up post titles, but not this time.   You read that correctly.

According to Bill, DeKalb Public Library was recently cited – along with Eddie’s and the Drunken Unicorn – by the Avett Brothers as key to helping them get their start in the music biz.

Here’s his eyewitness report…

When North Carolina’s the Avett Brothers – whose breakthrough album “I and Love and You” [was] nationally acclaimed as one of the best of 2009 (and by Decatur’s Paste magazine as one of the top 10 of the decade) – played a sold-out Fox Theatre on New Year’s Day, they sent a shout-out to the Atlanta audience for supporting them over the years while they slowly built their regional and now national following. They also mentioned three venues they said helped them get their start in the South’s major metropolis: the Drunken Unicorn, Eddie’s Attic and, believe it or not, the DeKalb Public Library (they called it the Decatur Public Library).

Sweet!  Speaking of “things that make your library cool/hip”, did you know the DeKalb Public Library operates a blog?  Check it HERE!

DeKalb County Commission Resisting Any Additional Tax on Residents

Decatur Metro | January 6, 2010

The common thread through the two of the three AJC articles on last night’s DeKalb County Commission meeting?  No new taxes!

Though MARTA is a stated top goal for the commission this year, and they support the proposed 10-county penny tax for the struggling public transportation system, they can’t currently get behind the bill because it asks Fulton and DeKalb to put up a second penny in sales tax.

CEO Burrell Ellis explains…

“We’ve got other pressing needs in our infrastructure and don’t want to be saddled with another penny,” Ellis told legislators.

That money is needed for roads, public safety, parks and other county services, he said.

And if the state were to impose the extra penny, commissioners stated they were ready to ask for a referendum to rescind the current penny tax.

Lenox Place Neighborhood Needs Help Planting Trees

Decatur Metro | January 6, 2010

Trees Atlanta is helping the Lenox Place neighborhood plant 30 trees in a “neglected green space” near the intersection of Hibernia and Adair on Saturday, January 16th, but they need a few more thumbs (green or otherwise) to help get those babies in the ground.

Diane writes in…

What greater satisfaction can a nature-loving person have than planting a tree? For decades to come, you will be able to watch the tree grow and spread its limbs, a living testament to our connection with nature.

Our neighborhood, Lenox Place, has been developing a neglected green space, and we have a rare opportunity to plant a number of trees on January 16, which is the Saturday of the weekend of MLK Day. On that Saturday, Trees Atlanta is going to help us plant 30 trees in and around the neighborhood, especially in the area we call Corley Commons. This is a green space near the intersection of Hibernia and Adair. Not only are we getting the trees at a deep discount, but the city is paying for half of the cost of the trees.

But WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS. This is an opportunity to get some exercise, contribute to the neighborhood and have a lifelong testament to a day’s work. This is a great family project — children will be able to help us dig and spread compost.

Learn About Eddie & Agnes First!

Decatur Metro | January 6, 2010

Daren Wang tweets…

I’ll be announcing the first concert in the Eddie & Agnes series on Twitter first. We’ve got a contract, just need to work out the details!

Think that might merit a follow?  If so click -> @darenwang

If that isn’t enough, Daren promises to promote many more of his “hare-brained ideas” there.  And what would Decatur be without a big book festival with sponsored port-o-lets and beer that costs in excess of $2,000??
