First Eddie & Agnes Concert: George Winston

Decatur Metro | January 11, 2010

Daren Wang just announced – via Twitter – that the first Eddie & Agnes concert at Presser Hall will be none other than pianist-superstar George Winston.

1st Eddie & Agnes show-2/23. GEORGE WINSTON plays from seasonal albums, N.O. R&B, stride piano & from LOVE WILL COME, MUSIC OF V. Guaraldi

So maybe I spoke too soon (or too generally) when I said the concerts would “all rock”, but that’s still a pretty good get and should fill up the space quite nicely!

Calls to Regulate Local Food Claims

Decatur Metro | January 11, 2010

Should we be regulating local food terminology?  Here’s the rather odd progression of events that led two Atlanta food writers to answer “Yes.”

1.  A writer at Thrillist made this statement about Decatur’s new Eat @ Thai 2…

The whole damn menu, which retains only the prime dishes from the original’s, is locally sourced, drawing meat & produce from Decatur and fresh seafood from Lawrenceville;

2.  Tom at Atlanta Cuisine heads over to Eat @ Thai 2, questioning Thrillist’s use of the term “locally sourced”, since Lawrenceville isn’t exactly a beachfront community.

This gets Tom wondering whether terms like “locally sourced” and “farm-to-table” should be federally regulated like the term “organic”.

3.  Enter Creative Loafing’s Cliff Bostock, who, after reading through this tale of web-drama, recalls…

Atlanta Demographics Through Netflix

Decatur Metro | January 11, 2010

TeeRuss points us to this fascinating interactive map on the New York Times website, showing Netflix rental patterns for 100 movies in a dozen U.S. cities.

Lucky for us, one of those metros is none other than the city where “every day is an opening day!”  Umm..yeah, Atlanta.

TeeRuss notes that Wall-E, the Tyler Perry movies, and Mad Men provide a revealing look at Atlanta.  I would add Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Milk, Religulous, and Slumdog to that list.  (I can’t link to the individual maps, so you gotta go find ‘em.)

Of the movies I just mentioned, can you guess which map is shown above?

CSD Considers Hosting Weeklong Programs Over Breaks

Decatur Metro | January 11, 2010

The CSD Calendar Committee is back with another announcement!

From the Assistant Superintendent…

The CSD District Calendar Committee is exploring the idea of sponsoring an electronic clearinghouse of weeklong enrichment opportunities for students to support the transition to the 2010-2011 academic calendar. If you know of organizations/groups that have produced high-quality, week-long enrichment camps/experiences in the past and might wish to offer a program at a CSD facility during 2010-2011, feel free to provide the contact information to Thomas Van Soelen (tvansoelen@csdecatur.net) at CSD. He will contact them regarding CSD specifics.
